Overview
The Rivian R1S is the electric adventure SUV that blends rugged capability with futuristic luxury, and the Performance Dual-Motor Large trim is the sweet spot in the lineup. Discontinued in 2024, it combines the impressive range of the Large battery pack with a serious wallop of software-unlocked power. It’s a do-it-all machine for the family that wants to explore in silence and comfort, competing directly with the Tesla Model X and BMW iX. On the used market, this highly desirable configuration can be found for around an estimated $62,990.
What's New for 2024?
The 2024 model year marked a transition for Rivian, as it streamlined its offerings around its new in-house "Enduro" motors. This "Performance Dual-Motor Large" configuration, produced from 2023-2024, represents this new era. While the standard Dual-Motor is already quick, this Performance variant gets a software tune-up to unleash significantly more horsepower and torque. This change simplified the lineup, providing a step-up from the standard model without requiring the quad-motor setup, effectively creating a new performance benchmark within the R1S family before its discontinuation.
Design & Exterior
The R1S turns heads with its unmistakable, friendly-yet-tough design. The signature vertical "stadium" headlights and full-width light bar give it a unique face on the road. It’s a properly substantial SUV, measuring 200.8 inches in length, 79.3 inches in width, and standing a commanding 77.3 inches tall. The clean, smooth body panels contrast with its boxy, utilitarian silhouette, conveying both high-tech sophistication and off-road readiness. It’s a design that looks equally at home in the city or deep in the wilderness, perfectly matching its versatile character.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Inside, the R1S boasts a stunningly minimalist cabin with high-quality, sustainable materials like vegan leather and recycled microfiber. The dash is dominated by a large central touchscreen and a crisp digital driver's display, which handle nearly all vehicle functions. While it lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the native system is fast and feature-rich. Passenger space is excellent across the first two rows, with a third row suitable for kids or short trips. Cargo is clever: you get a small 5.1 cubic feet with all seats up, a huge 79.9 with them folded, plus a generous 11.1 cubic-foot frunk.
Performance & Driving Experience
This is where the "Performance" badge earns its keep. The dual PMSM motors—one on each axle for all-wheel drive—unleash a colossal 665 hp and 829 lb-ft of torque. The result is a bonkers 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.5 seconds, which is frankly ridiculous for a 6,722-pound, three-row SUV. On the road, the standard air suspension provides a plush, quiet ride, yet it can raise for serious off-road ground clearance. Despite its size, it feels agile and planted, while strong regenerative braking allows for easy one-pedal driving in most situations.
Range, Battery & Charging
The Performance Dual-Motor is equipped with a substantial 131 kWh usable battery pack. According to Green Cars Compare's proprietary calculations, this delivers a solid real-world range estimate of 334 miles on a full charge, with an efficiency of 2.55 mi/kWh. For charging, its 400V architecture and CCS Type 1 port allow for a max DC fast-charging speed of 215 kW. At home, the standard 11.5 kW on-board AC charger can replenish the battery overnight. The R1S also features handy vehicle-to-load capability, allowing you to power gear directly from the vehicle's charge port.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
While this specific R1S configuration doesn't have an official NHTSA safety rating, its sibling, the R1T pickup, earned a prestigious IIHS Top Safety Pick+, suggesting a robust underlying structure. Every R1S comes standard with Rivian's comprehensive "Driver+" assistance suite. This includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. The system also features Highway Assist, which provides hands-free driving capability on select divided highways, making long road trips safer and more relaxing.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Rivian backs the R1S with a solid warranty package that provides excellent peace of mind. The comprehensive bumper-to-bumper warranty covers the vehicle for 5 years or 60,000 miles. More importantly for an EV, the battery pack and drivetrain components are covered for an impressive 8 years or 175,000 miles, whichever comes first. This includes a guarantee that the battery will retain at least 70% of its original capacity during that period. Rivian does not offer complimentary maintenance, with service handled by mobile technicians or dedicated service centers.
