Overview
The Volkswagen ID.4 Pure is the accessible entry point into VW's all-electric SUV family, offering a brilliant blend of practicality, comfort, and zero-emission driving. Positioned as a smart choice for families and city-dwellers, this trim focuses on delivering core EV benefits without a hefty price tag. In Europe, a new model starts at around €40,335, with used examples available from approximately €26,290. It’s a seriously competent electric all-rounder that packages the future of motoring in a familiar, user-friendly SUV shape, making the switch to electric a total breeze.
What's New for 2025?
For 2025, the ID.4 Pure gets a crucial tech upgrade that massively improves the daily driving experience. The old, fiddly infotainment system is out, replaced by a much larger and more intuitive touchscreen running VW's latest software. This new setup is quicker, slicker, and features illuminated touch sliders for volume and climate control, fixing a major gripe with earlier models. While higher-spec trims get powertrain boosts, the Pure focuses its 2025 update on creating a more premium and less frustrating cabin environment, making it a much more compelling package than before.
Design & Exterior
The ID.4 Pure boasts a clean, futuristic look that’s smooth and aerodynamically efficient. It avoids overly aggressive styling for a friendly, approachable vibe. The design features a closed-off front grille and sleek LED lighting that give it a distinct EV identity. As the entry-level model, it has a slightly more understated appearance, but it's still a handsome machine. It measures up at a practical 4584 mm long, 1852 mm wide, and 1634 mm tall, giving it a solid, commanding presence on the road without being a pain to park.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Inside, the ID.4 Pure offers a minimalist and impressively spacious cabin with a modern feel. The updated infotainment system is the star of the show, featuring a large, crisp central screen with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Passenger space is generous for five adults, thanks to the long 2771 mm wheelbase. When it comes to luggage, you're sorted with a massive 543-litre boot, which expands to a van-like 1575 litres with the rear seats folded down. However, there's no front trunk, or 'frunk', for extra cable storage.
Performance & Driving Experience
The ID.4 Pure is engineered for smooth, effortless progress rather than neck-snapping launches. Its rear-mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) produces 125 kW and 310 Nm of torque, getting you from 0-100 km/h in a respectable 9 seconds. The rear-wheel-drive layout provides balanced and predictable handling, while the ride is supple and comfortable, soaking up bumps with ease. It's an incredibly quiet and relaxing car to drive, making it a perfect companion for daily commutes and long-distance family trips, with strong regenerative braking to help claw back energy in town.
Range, Battery & Charging
Fitted with a 52 kWh usable battery pack, the ID.4 Pure delivers a practical real-world range. Based on Green Cars Compare's calculations, you can expect around 315 km on a full charge, with an excellent efficiency of 6.06 km/kWh. For charging, its CCS Type 2 port supports up to 11 kW on an AC home charger, filling the battery in about 5 hours. When you’re on the move, it can pull a maximum of 145 kW from a DC fast charger, zapping the battery from 10-80% in under 30 minutes.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
Volkswagen hasn't skimped on safety, and the ID.4 proudly wears a full 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. The Pure trim comes equipped with a solid baseline of standard driver-assistance features, including Front Assist with emergency braking and pedestrian detection, plus Lane Assist to help keep you from straying. More advanced systems, such as VW's excellent Travel Assist which combines adaptive cruise control and lane centering for semi-autonomous driving, are typically available as part of optional packages, allowing you to spec up the safety tech if you wish.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Volkswagen provides solid peace of mind for ID.4 owners in Europe. The vehicle itself is covered by a 2-year, unlimited-kilometre basic warranty. More importantly, the high-voltage battery pack is protected by a separate, much longer warranty of 8 years or 160,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. This includes a guarantee that the battery will retain at least 70% of its original usable capacity during that period. With fewer moving parts than a petrol car, maintenance is simpler and generally less expensive, mainly involving checks on brakes, tyres, and cabin filters.
