Overview
The 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz Long GTX is the performance-focused, all-wheel-drive version of the beloved electric microbus. It's a proper family hauler with serious punch, blending iconic retro-cool styling with cutting-edge EV tech. This long-wheelbase variant offers flexible five, six, or seven-seat layouts, making it practical for any adventure. As the most powerful production 'Bulli' ever, the GTX adds a sporty flair to the lineup, answering the call for more poke and all-weather capability. With a starting price around €74,928 in Europe, it’s a premium but compelling package for style-conscious EV buyers.
What's New for 2025?
The big news for 2025 is the arrival of this very GTX trim. It injects a serious dose of performance into the ID.Buzz family, introducing all-wheel drive and a more potent dual-motor setup for the first time. This model also debuts the larger 86 kWh battery pack for the Buzz. Inside, the GTX benefits from a next-generation infotainment system with a bigger 12.9-inch screen and improved software, plus an optional panoramic sunroof with electronically dimmable 'smart glass'. It’s a significant upgrade that makes the electric bus properly quick and tech-savvy.
Design & Exterior
The GTX trim takes the ID.Buzz's charming design and gives it a sporty, more aggressive edge. It sits on unique 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 21-inch options available. You'll spot the GTX by its bespoke bumper featuring a black honeycomb air intake, black high-gloss body elements, and standard IQ.Light LED matrix headlights. Measuring 4962 mm long, 1985 mm wide, and 1924 mm tall, the stretched wheelbase gives it a more planted stance. A new Cherry Red paint colour, exclusive to the GTX, completes its purposeful, head-turning look.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Inside, the GTX gets a sporty makeover with a black headliner and unique seats featuring red contrast stitching and perforated GTX lettering. The flexible long-wheelbase platform allows for five, six, or seven-seat configurations, offering acres of passenger room. It's absolutely cavernous, boasting 1340 litres of boot space in five-seat guise, expanding to a massive 2469 litres with the seats folded. Tech is upgraded with a new, faster 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and an optional head-up display. Sadly, there’s still no frunk for stashing charging cables.
Performance & Driving Experience
Don't let the van shape fool you; this bus can boogie. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, combining a front induction motor with a rear permanent magnet motor, churns out a hefty 250 kW and 679 Nm of torque. That's enough grunt to launch this family hauler from 0-100 km/h in a hot-hatch-bothering 6.4 seconds. While it's not a sports car, the low centre of gravity provides stable handling, and the instant torque makes for effortless overtaking. The ride remains comfortable, soaking up bumps well, making it a surprisingly rapid and refined cruiser.
Range, Battery & Charging
The Long GTX is juiced up with a sizable 86 kWh usable battery pack. Green Cars Compare estimates a real-world range of around 403 km, with an efficiency of 4.69 km/kWh, making long family trips viable. When it's time to plug in, it accepts up to 11 kW on an AC charger. Find a powerful DC fast charger, and the GTX can guzzle electricity at a peak rate of 200 kW, taking the battery from 10-80% in around 26 minutes. The standard European CCS Type 2 port is conveniently located on the rear flank.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
While the GTX trim hasn't been individually tested, the standard ID.Buzz earned a top five-star Euro NCAP rating, and this model should be just as safe. It comes packed with a solid suite of standard driver aids, including autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. For a more relaxed drive, you can option up to the advanced Travel Assist system, which combines adaptive cruise control and lane centering for semi-autonomous driving on motorways. Park Assist Plus with a memory function for automated parking into pre-saved spaces is also available.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Volkswagen provides solid peace of mind with its standard European warranty package. This includes a 2-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty for the entire vehicle and a 3-year warranty for the paintwork. Crucially, the high-voltage battery is covered for the long haul with an 8-year or 160,000 km warranty, whichever comes first, guaranteeing it will retain at least 70% of its original usable capacity. As with most EVs, maintenance is minimal compared to a combustion-engine vehicle, primarily involving checks on brakes, tyres, and cabin filters, helping to lower running costs.
