Overview
The 2025 Mercedes G-Class 580 EQ is here, and it’s the all-electric G-Wagen we’ve been waiting for! This beast electrifies the iconic off-roader, blending its legendary boxy charm with cutting-edge EV tech. Positioned as a premium, no-compromise electric SUV, the 580 EQ boasts a quad-motor setup for unparalleled control on and off the tarmac. With an estimated new price around €142,622 in Europe, it’s a serious piece of kit, offering a unique blend of luxury, go-anywhere ability, and zero tailpipe emissions. It's the G-Class, electrified, and somehow even more G-Classy!
What's New for 2025?
For 2025, it's all new! The G-Class 580 EQ marks the very first time this legendary off-roader has gone fully electric. Mercedes hasn't just slapped in a battery; they've re-engineered it with a robust ladder frame housing the integrated battery pack for protection and a low centre of gravity. It features a groundbreaking four-motor powertrain, giving each wheel its own motive force. Plus, it gets cool EV-specific design tweaks, enhanced aerodynamics, and a suite of electrifying off-road tech like G-TURN and G-STEERING, making it a proper game-changer for rugged luxury.
Design & Exterior
Visually, the G 580 EQ is unmistakably a G-Class, retaining that iconic, love-it-or-hate-it boxy silhouette. However, look closer and you'll spot the EV differences: a sleek, optional "Black Panel" grille, subtly aero-optimised alloy wheels, a slightly raised bonnet, and new A-pillar cladding for better airflow. Dimensions are a chunky 4624 mm in length, 1931 mm in width, and 1986 mm in height. You can even spec an optional rear design box instead of the traditional spare wheel carrier, shouting its electric credentials loud and proud.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Inside, the G 580 EQ is pure G-Class luxury mixed with modern tech. You get top-notch materials, that familiar upright driving position, and surprising refinement. The dashboard is dominated by the latest MBUX infotainment system, with twin 12.3-inch screens for instruments and media, complete with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Passenger space is ample. Cargo-wise, there's 555 litres in the boot, expanding to a massive 1990 litres with the seats folded. Alas, there's no frunk, but features like the "Energy Transparent Bonnet" view are seriously trick for off-roading.
Performance & Driving Experience
This electric G is an absolute powerhouse! The 580 EQ packs four electric motors – two PMSM units at the front and two at the rear – delivering a mighty 432 kW and a colossal 1164 Nm of torque through its all-wheel-drive system. That means a surprising 0-100 km/h sprint in just 4.7 seconds! On the road, it's smoother and quieter than its combustion siblings. Off-road, it’s a revelation, with innovative G-TURN for spinning on the spot, G-STEERING for tighter turns, and selectable low-range gearing. It’s properly capable, no questions asked.
Range, Battery & Charging
The G 580 EQ is equipped with a substantial 116 kWh usable battery pack, providing a real-world range estimated at 396 kilometres, as calculated by Green Cars Compare, with an efficiency of around 3.41 km/kWh. For charging, it supports AC charging up to 11 kW via its CCS Type 2 port, meaning a full top-up overnight. When you need a quick boost, it can handle DC fast charging at up to 200 kW, zapping the battery from 10% to 80% in around 32 minutes. That’s pretty nifty for such a big bruiser!
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
While specific Euro NCAP ratings for the new G 580 EQ are yet to be released, expect a comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistance systems befitting a top-tier Mercedes. Standard kit will likely include Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, and adaptive cruise control. Given its off-road prowess, unique systems to aid challenging manoeuvres are also part of the package, ensuring you’re looked after whether you’re cruising the autobahn or tackling a mountain trail. Mercedes doesn't skimp on safety, and this electric G will be no exception.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Owners of the G 580 EQ in Europe can expect Mercedes-Benz's standard new vehicle warranty, which is typically 2 years with unlimited kilometres. The crucial high-voltage battery pack will benefit from a more extensive warranty, generally 8 years or 160,000 kilometres, guaranteeing a minimum level of capacity (often 70%). As a brand-new model, long-term reliability insights are yet to form, but Mercedes’ EV tech is maturing, and the G-Class has a heritage of toughness. Maintenance should be simpler than its ICE counterparts, focusing on general vehicle checks and battery health.
