Overview
The Rivian R1S is a go-anywhere, do-anything electric SUV that blends rugged capability with futuristic tech and serious luxury. This Quad-Motor Large pack version, which ceased production in early 2024, is the one for ultimate performance enthusiasts. Packing seven seats and mind-bending power, it's a true adventure vehicle that can out-accelerate supercars. While never officially sold new in Europe, its impressive specs make it a sought-after import. On the used market, it represents the pinnacle of Rivian's early performance engineering, a proper trailblazer in the premium EV space.
What's New for 2024?
The biggest news for 2024 is that this specific Quad-Motor configuration, which uses motors sourced from Bosch, has been discontinued. Rivian has streamlined its lineup, shifting focus to its new in-house "Enduro" motors for both Dual-Motor and a new Quad-Motor setup paired with a different battery pack. So, finding a "2024" model of this specific trim means securing one of the very last units produced. Ongoing over-the-air software updates continue to refine the infotainment system, driving dynamics, and efficiency for all R1S models on the road, keeping them feeling fresh.
Design & Exterior
The Rivian R1S makes an unforgettable first impression with its distinctive "stadium" headlights and full-width front light bar. It’s a clean, futuristic take on the classic boxy SUV, looking both friendly and tough. It's a big machine, measuring 5100 mm long, 2014 mm wide, and 1963 mm tall, giving it serious road presence. The standard air suspension not only provides a smooth ride but also allows you to raise it for off-road clearance or lower it for easier access. The design is minimalist yet functional, screaming adventure from every angle.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Inside, the R1S Quad-Motor boasts a stunningly minimalist cabin with high-quality vegan leather, sustainable wood trim, and a spacious, airy feel. It’s a proper 7-seater, though the third row is best for kids. The tech is dominated by a large central touchscreen and a crisp digital driver display, but be warned—there's no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Cargo space is immense; you get a usable 144 litres behind the third row, a massive 2262 litres with seats folded, and a brilliant 314-litre "frunk" under the bonnet.
Performance & Driving Experience
This is where the Quad-Motor R1S absolutely shines. With a staggering 623 kW of power and 1231 Nm of torque from four permanent magnet motors—one at each wheel—it delivers a gut-punch acceleration of 0-100 km/h in a blistering 3.2 seconds. This isn't just a drag-strip hero; the true all-wheel-drive system provides incredible torque vectoring for uncanny cornering agility and truly epic off-road capability. The ride is comfortable thanks to the standard air suspension, and the regenerative braking is strong, allowing for easy one-pedal driving in most situations.
Range, Battery & Charging
The Large pack provides a 131 kWh usable battery capacity. According to Green Cars Compare's calculations, this delivers a realistic real-world range of around 491 km, with an efficiency of 3.75 km/kWh. For home charging, the standard 11.5 kW AC on-board charger can top up the battery overnight. On the road, its 400V architecture allows for a DC fast-charging peak of 215 kW. While US models have a CCS Type 1 port, a European version would feature the standard CCS Type 2 connector for seamless charging across the continent.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
While the Rivian R1S has not yet been officially rated by Euro NCAP, it earned the highest Top Safety Pick+ award from the stringent US-based IIHS, indicating exceptional crashworthiness. Every R1S comes standard with the comprehensive 'Driver+' assistance suite. This Level 2 system includes adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist with lane centering, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. It provides a confident and semi-autonomous driving experience on motorways, acting as a reliable co-pilot for long journeys and daily commutes alike.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Rivian offers a robust warranty package that should inspire confidence. Owners are covered by a comprehensive vehicle warranty for 5 years or approximately 96,000 km. More importantly, the critical battery pack and drivetrain components are covered for an impressive 8 years or approximately 280,000 km, whichever comes first, with a guarantee against excessive degradation. Maintenance is handled by Rivian's mobile service fleet, which can perform many services right at your home or office, adding a layer of convenience to the ownership experience that few rivals can match.
