2023 Toyota bZ4X review – better than a Kia EV6? | What Car?

Uploaded 3 years ago by What Car?

Video Summary

The Toyota BZ4X is not Toyota’s first EV. A battery-powered version of the Rav4 was sold in California in the 1990s.

Toyota is late to the fully electric modern car party.

The BZ part of the name means Beyond Zero. The 4 relates to the size of the car, and the X stands for crossover or SUV.

The BZ4X is 4.69 meters long, slightly longer than a RAV4 and exactly the same size as the Subaru Solterra.

The main rivals of the BZ4X are the Tesla Model Y, the Kia EV6, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, and the Volkswagen ID.4.

The car’s 71.4 kWh battery can be charged in just under 13 hours using a 7kW wallbox at home. It can also be charged in ideal conditions at up to 150 kW from a public CCS charger.

With a full charge, the all-wheel-drive model can travel up to 286 miles, or up to 317 miles in the lighter front-wheel-drive version.

Toyota will guarantee a minimum of 70% of the original battery capacity for up to ten years or 620,000 miles if the car has a health check every year.

The interior is a little mixed. The driving position, seat, steering wheel, and pedals align nicely, and there is a lot of adjustment available.
The seat is comfortable and more supportive than that of the Tesla Model Y.

There is soft-touch material at the tops of the doors, a piano black finish on the center console, and fabric on the dashboard.

Door pulls feel low-rent, and some parts of the interior do not feel well put together. The center console has a lot of movement.

A wireless charging pad sits under a lid, and the storage space under the center armrest is enormous. One thing that is missing is a glove box.

Legroom in the rear is great, and the floor is flat. Headroom can be an issue, particularly on models with a sunroof.

The boot space is 452 liters.

The BZ4X offers a quiet and comfortable ride.

The regenerative braking has limited settings with the option of on, off, or automatic mode.

The acceleration is quick enough, although not particularly fast compared to similar electric cars. The 0-62 time of the all-wheel-drive model is 6.9 seconds.
