Video Summary
The Omoda E5 is sold in a single variant only for RM146,800 and has a WLTP range of 430 kilometers.
It goes against the BYD Atto 3 extended range, which costs RM167,800, has a WLTP range of 420 kilometers. There’s a 21,000 ringgit price difference between them.
The Omoda E5 has a different front bumper, without the fancy grill from the Omoda 5. It has a charging port at the front with a large charging flap. The vehicle also has 18-inch aero wheels with plastic aero caps and tires from Kumho. Also, a privacy glass that you see on the rear window and the rear wind screen. And instead of the Cherry lettering you find on the Omoda 5, there is a lettering that says Omoda. A technical improvement to the Omoda E5 is that it gets rare multi-link suspension, instead of the torsion beam set-up that you see on the Omoda 5.
Visually, it's a bit more dramatic with a bit more flair. Small tires look funny, but it's not something you can't fix with aftermarket solutions.
It takes design inspiration from its rival. The blue and white color combination and the front seats with fixed headrests, is a case of copying a friend’s homework.
The color choice is questionable, and it looks like a hedgehog Pokemon with flames bursting out of its back.
The fake wood trims look a bit out of place. Overall material choice is good, with soft touch on the dashboard and doors, and decent stitching. It includes USB ports on the center console. Door bins are of medium size. There are cornering lights and sequential turn signals. Has overall cleaner and simpler look compared to the petrol Omoda 5. The best thing I think they are cornering lights and sequential turn signals.
The charging port could use some improvement. It's opened from the inside, and there's no push to eject motion. The big flap interrupts the range of motion of the hood, but it is what contains the frunk. The rear seat bench is not very supportive for your thighs.
It can easily hold two suitcases at the back. Has a 12-volt socket in here. And if you decide to remove this foam space organizer underneath the boot floor, you realize that there is actually a mount for a spare wheel. So, should you desire, you can actually squeeze in a space saver spare wheel underneath the boot floor.
This car makes 150 kilowatts or 204 metric horsepower and 340 Newton meters of torque from a single motor front wheel drive set up. That power is sufficient.
The regen braking could use some improvement, there's a bit of a delay with regen breaking. So if you put your foot down at 50% throttle and then you go to 30% throttle, regen braking would have kicked in,
The Omoda E5 rides firmer than the Atto 3.
At 147,000 ringgit, it comes with ADAS. This system is intelligent in terms of recognizing the types of vehicle around it.
At 146,800 RM, the Omoda E5 comes with ADAS, and its system is intelligent in terms of recognizing the types of vehicle around it and the types of blind markings on the road, but the way that it reacts to this information could be smoother.
There is no range estimator.
You cannot put a child seat at the front.
The navigation system has zero special EV functions to search for a charger.
You will be sitting mainly on the left to right-hand side. The car has zero body aches and a good seating ergonomics.
The interior also features a 10.25-inch screen, which is the instrument cluster with the UI looking like something from Proton.
This car has 204hp, 340Nm of torque, with better tires it will be better. Could use better tires for better performance and grip.
Some drive controls were not embedded inside the touch screen (audio and region setting), plus, the reflection coming from the screen itself is a distraction.
For what it is, a worthy alternative to the BYD Atto 3 (just get the black interior color option).
