The reviewed 2024 Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV is the first all-electric performance SUV from AMG. It uses the EQ platform underpinning the brand's S and E class all-electric sedans and utilities. The AMG replaces the EQE 500 with AMG-specific motors upfront and in back. These motors feature unique windings, adapted inverters, and upgraded cooling, allowing more current flow and resulting in 617 horsepower and 701 pound-feet of torque.
The AMG mid-size EQE SUV doesn't feel overly large to drive, however, it presents an incredibly solid, tank-like presence. Weighing close to 6,000 pounds, it behaves quite nimbly thanks to the standard rear axle steering. The acceleration feels like half its weight, pushing the driver back in the seat. Mercedes claims 0-60 in 3.4 seconds. It is considered to be a conservative figure. Race start with boost function unlocks an additional 60 horsepower. Range-wise, it exceeds expectations. While rated at 235 miles, the review had a remaining 21% battery after a 200-mile road trip, estimating an observed range of around 254 miles. The 90.6 kWh battery can utilize max DC fast charging.
Charging at 170 kW adds about 100 miles of range in 15 minutes. Regenerative braking can feed power back at a rate of 260 kW. The optional ceramic brakes are plenty strong but a little touchy. There is also an active braking system that likes to initiate regen before the brake pedal is pressed while approaching another vehicle or an intersection. Nobody does interiors like Mercedes Benz with luxurious leather, carbon fiber materials, and a dash-wide hyper screen. It also includes turbine-like air vents, and ample storage. The cargo volume is 18.4 cubic feet, with a max capacity of 59.2 with rear seats folded.
The exterior AMG details are subtle with glossy black trim and dark chrome accents. There are three different 21-inch wheel patterns to choose from, with available 22s. Most of the AMG goodness lies deep within the performance-tuned, fully variable 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive that adjusts torque distribution 160 times per second. The AMG Ride Control Plus air suspension with adaptive damping and active roll stabilization monitors driving conditions and adjusts the suspension. Multiple drive settings span from comfort to sport plus. The efficiency is at 46 kWh/100 miles. It's MotorWeek's favorite Mercedes EV yet, due to AMG's involvement. The price starts at $110,750.
