The 2025 Volvo EX40 has a new name and upgrades to the battery and electrical system. The design is mostly unchanged with a friendly face. Three trim levels are available: Core, Plus, and Ultra.The vehicle is short and stubby compared to its competitors and features a mostly vertical design. The Ultra trim has a black roof and 20-inch wheels that are an upgrade from the standard 18-inch wheels.
The rear design is simple, featuring a new badge with the new name, Volvo lettering across the back, and has an unflattering sand dune color. All models come standard with a power liftgate, and have a frunk to store charging cables.
Two powertrain options are available: a single rear-wheel drive motor with 248 horsepower, and a dual-motor all-wheel drive variant providing 402 horsepower. The dual-motor battery has been increased to 82 kWh. Total range is 296 miles for the single motor and 260 for the dual motor.
Charging rates have been upgraded to 205 kW. Volvo is switching to the NACS Tesla-style plug-in. Pricing starts at $52,000 including the destination charge, and almost matches the Lexus RZ and Genesis GV60; the top-line version comes in at about $62,000.
Inside, it provides easy front row access, but has mixed material choices; the Swedish Scandinavian simplicity is somewhat all over the place.
Standard features include dual-zone climate control and heated front seats. The driver's seat has four-way power lumbar support. The touch screen runs on the Google built-in operating system which is not user friendly; the lack of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is disappointing. Despite this, maps are functional.
Rear cargo space is 16 cubic feet and offers under-floor storage with configuration options. Levers to fold down the rear seats are found only on the side doors.
Behind the wheel, the electric powertrain and one-pedal driving system work together to deliver a smooth and surprising punch, but the ride feels a little top-heavy.
