Video Summary
The Cupra Tavascan is a larger EV with more performance and range than the Born. The Tavascan has a sharp road presence. The hood design features dents that give a sporty feel. There is little practicality to these dents. The car has new lighting signatures.
All Tavascan versions have the same 77-kilowatt-hour battery. There's the option of two-wheel or all-wheel drive.
Both versions are nippy and rangy. The rear-wheel drive has 210 kilowatts or 286 PS and a WTLP claimed range of 353 miles. The 0-62 time is a respectable 6.8 seconds.
The all-wheel drive model has 250 kilowatts or 340 PS with a 0-62 time of 5.5 seconds. The range falls to 324 miles. The AWD gets larger 20-inch alloy wheels, dark night interior, ambient lighting, and a Sennheiser sound system as standard.
A heat pump, heated rear seats, and a heated windshield are optional on all versions.
The car is very quick but also very heavy, weighing 2.2 tons. Engineering effort was put into its driving dynamics. The steering is well-weighted and the handling feels sharp. It has front McPherson struts and an advanced multi-link rear design. The steering feels engaging thanks to progressive steering.
The brakes are spongy, giving nothing for a while and then all the braking power at once. There are three levels of regenerative braking on the steering wheel, and a further braking mode selected by twisting the gear selector into B. B mode is the strongest mode available, but it can’t be described as one-pedal drive.
Cupra alloy wheels are distinctive; the 21-inch alloys here have the Adrenaline Pack.
The Tavascan is an SUV coupe, which is currently popular and contributes to more aerodynamic stance for more range. It’s large enough not to compromise rear headroom. It has 540 liters of boot space.
The rear design is more simple and looks less handsome than the front. There’s an aggressive gloss black diffuser. A light-up spoiler would have been cooler.
The interior is daring and very plastic-y. The interior lighting is great, especially at night. A big touchscreen is in the center. Haptic buttons on the steering wheel can be accidentally pressed. The back has legroom, USB-C chargers, and a pull-out armrest, but no iPad holder.
This is not a car for everyone. Some of the technology seems old and is dressed up to look new.
