Mercedes-AMG EQE 53: Can An Electric AMG Ever Be Fun?

Video Summary
The EQE 53, an enhanced version of the standard car, is a large electric sedan. It is very quick; officially, it will do 0-62 in 3.3 seconds. This obliterates the 0-62 time of the E53, and even the big dog, E63.
The car has two electric motors, one on the front and one on the back, that make a total of 476 horsepower each. It has 1,000 Newton-meters off of launch. However, the electric-car party trick is fast in a straight line. This EQS weighs 2.6 tons, and is heavy.
A full-bore acceleration requires spending extra cash of £4,000 plus tax for the AMG Dynamic Plus package. Otherwise, power drops to 626 instead of 686; 0-62 drops two tenths, and top speed drops to 130 instead of 150.
In comfort mode, power is limited to 80%; in sport mode, 90%. Sport Plus has 100% output. During launch control, the motors can be cranked to 110% for a maximum of 686 hp during launch control, after which things settle down, slightly.
The break regen is also aggressive; the paddle can be pulled to adjust the level of regen. It can recharge the car at 270 kW. It is also compatible with 22kW and 11kW home charging, if rich enough to have it.
As for looks, its interior is very nice, thanks to upgraded sports seats and bespoke AMG red stitching. It is also spacious with room front and back, and has tons of technology as expected for an upmarket Mercedes. In addition, AMG Sound Experience adds an artificial metallic noise.
On the outside, there is a completely smooth front grille with the metallic elements. There is also the “A” wing design for the lower bumper and “V” shaped DRLs. Down the side, there are 20” or 21” wheels. Carbon ceramic brakes will require the 21” wheels. It is equipped with flush door handles. However, there are no exhaust pipes.
In profile, it is a bit blobby, but overall, it is not bad for an AMG’s first electric effort. Also, it does not look a pinup. The weight is a problem, especially on undulating roads, and especially in Comfort mode; the extra weight is felt. Going into sport mode adds more body control.
The steering wheel has adjustable dials for driving mode and suspension comfort levels, with displays. There is one big flaw: when one puts one’s elbow on the console to operate the central screen, they can accidentally turn the car off.
However, performance brands that go full electric will face an uphill battle to engage the driver. All in all, the reviewer said for him the jury is still out.
