The MG5 has undergone a significant facelift and now looks better, more like the MG4 with sharp angles and a modern look. It retains practicality as an estate car.This is essentially the same car underneath. Only the long-range version, with a 60-kilowatt-hour battery, is available. It now comes with vehicle to load. It also has an app for preheating in winter. Usable roof bars with a 75-kilogram capacity are now standard.
The side view is similar to other estates. The rear entry to the car is acceptable but there are better ones. The boot is a smaller estate access hatchback and not flat.
The steering wheel feels ok. The buttons feel nice, and solid enough. Black gloss trim looks nice but gets full of fingerprints. The seats are American-style, comfortable, and are cloth-effect with fake leather trim. The doorbins are ok sized for bottles and there are hard-wearing plastics.
The dashboard features a plastic metal effect. The smaller buttons do not have that same effect. The infotainment touchscreen controls are dubious at best.
The overall refinement of the MG5 is lacking in putting the power in. It is a quick car 7.7 to 60 but not well refined.
Traction control is on but it is only moderately effective because the car still spins out when starting. It needs finesse to be a great car.
As the grant is no longer available, the car starts around £31,000. At that price, it is still a cracking buy because everything else has gone up. It’s great if on a budget.
