The MG5S has two battery sizes and trim levels available. For €29,995 you get a fairly highly specced entry version of the car. A 49 kWh battery will do 340km, and a 64kWh battery will do 480km. The higher Exclusive trim only comes with the larger battery, and costs €34,995. The price undercuts pretty much everything the MG5S is compared with, such as the Kona, Elroq, and EV3. The nose of the car has nods to the racing heritage of MG of old, and there’s an air curtain down here. The headlights are split and there’s an active air curtain over the front. The drag co-efficient of 0.27 helps range.
In length it's 4476mm, with a wheel base of 2730 mm. The wheels are squashed into the four corners which gives more interior space. The interior rear space is vast. The car has disks all round and 17 or 18 inch wheels. Roof rails are standard on all versions. Paint colours apart from white are an extra €700. The MG5S has vehicle to load as standard, but not vehicle to grid. The charging port isn’t always easy to access, and 139kW DC charging is available on the larger battery and 120kW on the smaller battery.
Rear legroom is exceptional for this size and price. The 2730 mm wheel base comes into its own. The battery height and thickness is a similar size to a can of coke, which is smaller than an Atto battery in a BYD. An armrest has a good angle. All of the materials and two tone grey stands up well with a premium feel. There is decent overall head height, pockets on the back, a USB-C charger but no dual zone climate. You do get two air vents though. There's a flat floor, and the bench is supportive to the thighs. There's only one isofix point in the front passenger seat. The large steering wheel is the same as the HS and MG4.
It comes with physical controls down here for the climate and screen, but not in China. All versions get the large screen, and the higher version a 360 degree camera with heated seats and heated steering wheel. A wireless charging plate is available. There are two cup holders, a rotary dial, and USB changing ports in the armrest, and storage space for the tunnel. The under floor has storage nets and some lights, but no 12V charger. The warranty is impressive, at 7 years on the car and 8 years on 150,000km for the battery. The MG5S is quiet, well dampened and has a nice weighted steering.
Four different levels of regen exist, and a one pedal driving solution. You need to use the screen to manipulate these aspects, but that has been moved next to the rotor dial.
