Video Summary
The MG4 EV is a B-segment electric SUV. It is a ground-up EV, different from the ZS EV that it replaces. The design was done primarily in Shanghai, not London. The headlights are split into two pieces. The top-spec Trophy runs on 18-inch alloys. The light bar at the rear is similar to the MG4, but more integrated. Key features include a 12.3-inch main touchscreen display and a 10.25-inch driver's information display; both are sharp with good graphics. MG has listened to customers, retaining key physical buttons for volume, climate, and demisters. The console features cup holders and a suede finish panel. Wireless charging is present. Seat quality is good and comfortable. The cabin is better than recent MGs and feels like a step up. The touchscreen is clear, the graphics are good, and it is responsive, but not at Tesla speed. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and wireless. SE cars get a rear camera. The driver's screen is simple, not configurable, and doesn't have a lot of information, but is good for the class. There is door bin storage, cup holders, and a sizable cubby. There is storage under the bridge. The glove box is reasonable in size. Back seats are good for this class, with a flat floor allowing three abreast; they have a USB-C port, good footroom, and good knee room. The trunk offers 453 liters of space and expands to 1440 liters with the seats down. Seats can be split, but access is not from the rear. There is a flat load lip and extra space under the floor for cables. A rigid parcel shelf makes storage bulky. There is no frunk (front trunk). The MG ES5 EV begins with a 49 kWh battery and a 211-mile range and up to 120 kW DC fast charging. The SE long-range has a 64 kWh battery and 298 miles of range, plus 139 kW DC charging. Both models have a rear-mounted unit with 227 hp and 350 Nm of torque, reaching 62 mph in 8.3 seconds. The car is pretty sprightly. Sport mode is its most exciting mode. For daily driving, it is fine; the steering has some heft and the ride is busy at low speeds. The car is tuned for the UK and is fun to drive. It is an easy car to drive. The MG S5 EV does not have pure design or desire, but makes a lot of sense. Its price is well under a Vauxhall Mocha E. It doesn't feel too challenging. As an affordable EV the car has an impressive package.
