Video Summary
- The Subaru Solterra is a mid-priced, mid-performing, mid-sized SUV that shares much of its architecture with the Toyota BZ4X. - The equivalent Toyota BZ4X is a couple of grand more expensive, but a cheaper BZ4X can be found with front-wheel drive, whereas the Solterra comes only with all-wheel drive and starts just under £50k for the limited model. - The Solterra has a 64kWh usable battery pack and motors at each end for 4-wheel drive. - The possible range on the smaller 18-inch wheels is 288 miles. - It has the same black plastic arches, but different headlights without Toyota's "eyebrow" and a hexagonal grill in front. - The tailgates are different moldlings, with the Toyota having a full-width light bar and the Solterra having two independent taillights. - The interior is very much like the BZ4X. - There are two trims: Limited or Touring. - The Touring edition has leather, wireless charging, and a big sunroof. - The driver's display is located further away than most cars. - A lot of driver assistance systems exist. - A constant warning chime for many functions can be annoying. - There is a decent centre console and no glovebox, which provides more knee room. - The quality of the interior feels durable but not plush. - Space is a bit smaller than a Mustang Mac-E, but a six-footer can be comfy in the back. - There is a decent boot with a wide opening and a low load lip, plus a split floor for hiding cables, but no frunk. - There are 107 brake horsepower in each motor, and its performance is plenty good enough with 0-62 mph in under 7 seconds. - On a greasy junction there is no tire scrabble and there is solid traction - Brake regeneration is available through paddles on the steering wheel. - There is an X mode that will allow snow and dirt modes or deep snow or mud modes. - The steering is slightly better than the BZ4X, although the weight is low it the corners, so the driver remains alert. - An update to their paranoid battery software buffers is expected to give better range. - The all-wheel drive is surprisingly capable and can get around in light off-road situations. - The Subaru actually drives a little bit better than the BZ4X, and I just feel a bit more kinship with the brand. - Both cars are “fine” but not efficient enough. Many other cars are coming into the electric market that are better.
