Renault 5: The Small Cheap Electric Car You Actually WANT

Video Summary

The new Renault 5 design takes inspiration from the original Renault 5, introduced in 1972. Despite the fresh, modern aesthetic, the design is a clear retro.

The new R5 design includes sharp, easily recognizable lines and a rear that leans forward, the same basic shape as its predecessor. The headlights offer a friendly face, and the taillights occupy similar positions. The air scoop has evolved into a charge indicator. Vertical lines from the original Renault 5's dashboard and a similar headliner are maintained.

The original's appeal lay in its practical side; the newer model, while longer at just over four meters, maintains a compact size and a spacious interior. The new generation has grown 40 cm in length.

Good rear entry is achievable but the rear seat can be tight. The luggage area starts at 326 liters and, with seats folded, increases to 1000 liters. It can also tow a maximum of 500 kg.

Renault is equipping the R5 with good hardware, such as a three-phase 11-kilowatt charger as standard.

It doesn't have a front trunk and contains the same electrical motor used in the Megane E-Tech electric. It is smaller and lighter.

At a later date, a version with 95 horsepower or 70 kilowatts will be made, as well as one with 120 horsepower, which is 88 kilowatts.

V2L (vehicle to load) and V2G (vehicle to grid) enable the car's electrical power to help charge other electronics, or contribute to power for your house, and the electrical grid. The car is able to do it, but the overall energy system and electrical grids, need some change in this aspect.

At the start of 2025, a cheaper version around 25,000 Euros will be offered with a 40-kilowatt battery pack, able to give 300 kilometers or 190 miles estimated range. It’s a lively car to drive. Torque steer is not excessive, and it is easy to love.

It handles corners very well.

The seating position provides good comfort and support and is better than in the old R5.

The car, in the test specification, weighs almost 1,500 kg due to its 52-kilowatt-hour battery pack and modern safety systems.

Overall, the car has a number of qualities that can enable it to take off. It is nice to look at, good to drive, affordable, and reasonably practical.
