Video Summary

The Porsche Taycan was overwhelmingly selected as Car and Driver’s EV of the Year. This EV is Porsche’s first dedicated attempt at the electric car market. Changes under the sheet metal of the 2025 model gave the Taycan a new lease on life. It offers more range, bigger batteries, and is lighter, with fancy new suspension technology. While value is not its strength, it has become an overwhelming favorite. For some reason, Porsche rated the initial Taycan at just 192 to 203 miles of range depending on the trim. The real-world test figures were much higher. The 4S tested did 330 miles in a real-world highway test at a constant 75mph. A previous test vehicle did just 220. Currently, no one else builds a better-driving EV.

The active dampers can react to the road input, or also push back, actively moving the suspension. The effect is nothing short of magic. The recent push from manufacturers, including Porsche, is to put climate controls on tactile feedback screens, which is considered “dumb” because it takes focus and dexterity from the road.

The new model is also fast; the base rear-wheel drive costs over $100,000 and makes 60 miles in 4.1 seconds with a 12.5 quarter mile.

Ultimately, all of this was to say and show that, at a time where automotive spec sheets are starting to read like fever dreams, the Porsche Taycan is a genuine driver's car. It is an enjoyable experience, as would be expected from a Porsche. With attack modes, handling and steering are augmented by suspension tech. Even with 1,000 horsepower, the Turbo GT doesn’t feel like acceleration: it is immediate relocation, requiring a firm planting against the headrest to avoid a chiropractor.
