Why No One's Buying These // 2024 Subaru Solterra Review

Video Summary

The Subaru Solterra does not have towing capabilities. There is a lot of emphasis on aero, with vortex generator fins. Only one vent is for the sound speaker on one side. For off-road, it has short overhangs and a good angle for the departure angle. The rear uses an all-steel double-wishbone suspension. Aluminum knuckles and divorced coil spring. Dampers with an internal rebound spring are manufactured by Tokico Japan. The rear anti-sway bar measures at 24mm in diameter. The Subaru Solterra has a chassis code of ZAA, and is built upon Toyota's ETNGA platform, shared also with the Lexus RZ and the Toyota BZ4X.

The touring model weighs 4,486 pounds. It has a 96 cell 72.8-kilowatt hour lithium-ion pack, with a 201 amp hour rating. It can accept a charge in temperatures as low as negative 22° Fahrenheit. To put this thing on a lift, there are arrows pointing to thick aluminum pads, or jack it from the thick beams of the battery pack cover itself. The front and rear transmissions are completely independent and are transaxles with the integrated motor and inverter.

It is a Blue Nexus partnership company between Denso and Aisin for Toyota Q410, a three-shaft type single-speed reduction gear transaxle with a ratio of 13.8 to 1. There is thick steel plating behind the front subframe, and a drain hole. The front utilizes an all-steel in construction MacPherson strut-style suspension, again with an aluminum knuckle up front. Tokico coilover dampers, plastic aero winglet attached to that lower spring bucket. The front anti-sway bar measures in at approximately 29mm in diameter with a fairly short overhang up front. The short overhang and rigid plastic skid plate makes it ready to get rock-crawling.

The aggressive ABS brakes have a little longer stopping distance. The two-piston front brake calipers have a 328 mm front rotor. Wheels are 20 by 7 1/2 die-cast alloy, wrapped in a 235 50 20 inch Bridgestone Turanza EL 450 tire. The wheels are held on by five M14 by 1.5 lug nuts at approximately 140 Newton meters of torque, with plastic inserts in the wheel spokes and "hairy cardboard" inner fender liners. Functional aero is on the front bumper with LED fogs.

There are two speakers up front behind the grill.

For the EBians assessment, the bolstering is in the middle, so it has just a little bit. The upholstery is done in two-tone navy blue synthetic leather and light gray in the center. Both the front and rear seats are heated/ventilated, and the steering wheel is heated. There are power folding mirrors and seat memory. The rear seats are high. The dual USB ports are located in the middle. And one two wheel drive that we don’t get has one 150-kilowatt motor. A very strange flat, broad power band.

The Subaru uses two different cooling systems. There's a genuine traction battery coolant on it, so that means both systems use different coolants with expansion tanks. The power charge cable gets stowed away underneath. The seat has perforation for ventilation. A final score for all the assessments for this vehicle has the character rating the lowest at about 5.

Overall, its biggest drawback is its lack of character.
