Alpine A290 - AutoWeek Review

Video Summary

The Alpine A290 has launch control, with lights on the dashboard that change from yellow to green when it's ready. It can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. The interior and space are explained in colleague Roy's video. The car is based on the Renault 5, and has been tweaked with different dampers, springs, anti-roll bars, and hydraulic bump stops. This improves comfort, and on bad roads, the car doesn’t bounce, providing more control. This car has sporty tires; the higher version has Pilot Sport 5 S tires for extra grip. The steering is not too heavy, but it still gives a feeling of precision. This car is not super nervous like some electric cars. Brakes are good. The car is fun to drive. Two things that should have been added were the ESP which has just on or off switch, needs an interim state, and a limited-slip differential. Without a limited slip differential on wet roads the car wants to veer to the side. On dry roads it feels good. The higher-powered version has 220 pk (metric horsepower) and 300 Newton-meters. It has a 52 kWh battery, good for a 350-kilometer range under normal conditions. If you are driving the way the car invites you to, the range will be 150 kilometers. There are two motor versions: an entry-level version with 180pk/285Nm and a higher version with 220pk/300Nm. The base model starts at €45,000.
