Video Summary
The MG ZS EV is reviewed in three specifications: Excite, Essence, and Long Range.
Excite is just over $45,000 drive away.
Essence is just over $48,000 and includes a leather interior and a large sunroof.
Long Range is the same specification as Essence but has a long-range battery and is just over $55,000.
The Excite and Essence models have a 51 kWh battery and are good for 320 km of range.
The electric motor is 130 kW and has 280 Nm of torque.
The Long Range model has a 72 kWh battery, good for 440 km of range.
The electric motor is slightly down on power at 115 kW, but the torque remains the same at 280 Nm.
MG provides a 7-year warranty on the vehicle, including unlimited mileage, and it includes the battery.
Servicing is only required every two years or 20,000 km and is not very expensive. The first service is only $295.
You can use a standard plug socket at home to charge the ZS EV, but it will take a long time. A faster 7 kW charger is recommended for $1,199 plus installation, and an 11 kW charger can be used with a three-phase system for $1,299 plus installation.
You can also use a public charger.
MG says that the maximum amount of power the ZS EV can take is 60 kW per hour.
An hour will give 60 kW of power, which is enough to fully charge the base models.
You are going to need to charge the bigger long-range model mostly fully.
Some like their electric car to look like a standard car, which the ZS does pretty well.
There are some great features such as LED headlights and 17-inch alloy wheels with Aero covers. There is also chrome around the windows and Keyless entry, including roof rails.
Not having electric features on tailgate could be considered an issue.
There's good room inside in a nice padded area where there's sort of a carbon fiber effect trim with some red stitching. The driving position is also good with a central 10-inch screen in the center, which you don't have to take your eyes off the road to look at that.
The infotainment system is pretty basic and a little slow, but Android Auto is helpful.
There is no fold-down center armrest.
Good points are: a longer warranty, low servicing costs, drive and comfort, excellent driving and viewing points.
The battery and motor has been designed to maximize range, power is down a little in the long range version.
