Overview
The Rivian R1S Dual-Motor Standard+ is a seriously capable, do-it-all electric adventure SUV. It blends rugged, go-anywhere attitude with a premium, tech-forward cabin perfect for the family. While this specific trim was discontinued in 2024, it remains a hot ticket on the used market, offering a compelling entry point into the Rivian ecosystem. It's a proper head-turner that’s as comfortable on the school run as it is on a muddy trail. On the pre-owned market, you can expect to find one for around $55,600, packing a ton of value.
What's New for 2024?
The 2024 model year marked a significant shift for the R1S lineup. The biggest news was the transition to Rivian's brilliant in-house 'Enduro' dual-motor setup, which powers this configuration. However, this specific "Standard+" battery pack was short-lived, as Rivian streamlined its offerings, discontinuing it in early 2024. It was effectively replaced by a new, slightly smaller LFP-based 'Standard' pack, making this 121 kWh version a unique find on the used market. Other updates included minor software tweaks and the expansion of the Rivian Adventure Network for charging.
Design & Exterior
Instantly recognizable, the Rivian R1S boasts a clean, futuristic design that’s both friendly and tough. The signature vertical "stadium" headlights and full-width light bar give it an unmistakable face. Its boxy, purposeful stance screams adventure, but the smooth body panels keep it looking sophisticated. Measuring 200.8 inches long, 79.3 inches wide, and 77.3 inches tall, it has serious presence on the road. This dual-motor version maintains the same ruggedly handsome look as its pricier siblings, sitting on all-terrain tires that prove it’s ready for action.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Step inside, and you're greeted by a stunningly minimalist and airy cabin built with sustainable, premium materials. The dashboard is dominated by a massive central touchscreen that controls nearly everything, paired with a crisp digital driver's display. While it misses out on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the native software is slick. Passenger space is generous, with flexible seating for five or seven. It's a proper cargo hauler too, with a massive 11.1 cubic-foot frunk, 5.1 cubic feet behind the third row, and a cavernous 79.9 cubic feet with the seats folded flat.
Performance & Driving Experience
Don't let the 'Standard+' name fool you; this thing is seriously quick. With its dual Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors delivering a combined 532 horsepower and 610 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels, it rockets from 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. The power delivery is instant and buttery smooth. Thanks to a sophisticated standard air suspension, the R1S handles with surprising agility for a big SUV, offering a comfortable ride that can be firmed up for corners or raised for off-road obstacles. It’s an absolute peach to drive.
Range, Battery & Charging
This R1S packs a 121 kWh usable battery, good for a Green Cars Compare estimated real-world range of 300 miles on a full charge, with an efficiency of about 2.48 mi/kWh. At home, the standard 11.5 kW on-board charger can top it up overnight. When you're on the road, its 400-volt architecture can pull a maximum of 215 kW from a DC fast charger, zapping the battery from 10% to 80% in a little over 30 minutes. It uses the common CCS Type 1 port for maximum compatibility.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
While official NHTSA crash-test ratings for this specific configuration are not published, the R1S is built on a robust skateboard platform designed with safety as a priority. Every R1S comes standard with Rivian's excellent 'Driver+' assistance suite. This includes Highway Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control and lane centering for stress-free long-distance travel. It also packs a full roster of active safety tech, including automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with lane change assist, and a 360-degree camera system to help you navigate tight spots.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Rivian backs the R1S with a solid warranty package, giving owners peace of mind. The comprehensive bumper-to-bumper warranty covers the vehicle for 5 years or 60,000 miles. More importantly for an EV, the battery pack and dual-motor drivetrain are covered for an impressive 8 years or 175,000 miles, whichever comes first. This includes a guarantee that the battery will retain at least 70% of its original capacity during that period. Unlike some rivals, Rivian doesn't offer complimentary scheduled maintenance, with service handled via mobile technicians or service centers.
