Overview
The Jaguar I-Pace EV400 was Jag's pioneering leap into the all-electric world, a sporty and luxurious SUV that dared to be different. Discontinued in this specific early configuration after 2020, it’s now an enticing option on the pre-owned market with prices around €23,950. This EV400 trim brought stunning concept-car looks to the road, paired with thrilling performance from its dual electric motors and that unmistakable Jaguar driving dynamism. It’s a head-turner with substance, offering a premium alternative in the growing electric field, especially for those craving a bit of British flair.
What's New for 2020?
For the 2020 model year, the I-Pace EV400 primarily received behind-the-scenes software tweaks. These updates focused on optimising battery performance and enhancing range calculation accuracy, delivering a more polished experience. Jaguar also made some minor adjustments to standard equipment lists across different European markets. The more significant upgrades, like the Pivi Pro infotainment system and faster 11kW on-board AC charging, were introduced for the subsequent 2021 model year. So, the 2020 EV400 largely carried over its impressive launch specification, keeping it sharp and competitive in the premium EV arena.
Design & Exterior
Phwoar! The I-Pace EV400 still looks like it drove straight off a motor show stand, even years later. Its cab-forward silhouette, short overhangs, and muscular haunches give it a properly futuristic and athletic SUV stance. Signature elements like the sleek LED headlights and bold grille (even without an engine to cool!) scream Jaguar. The EV400 trim typically boasted stylish alloy wheels, complementing its dynamic appeal. It measures a purposeful 4682 mm in length, 1895 mm in width (no mirrors), and 1565 mm in height, giving it serious road presence.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Slip inside the 2020 I-Pace EV400 and you're greeted by a cabin that masterfully blends modern tech with British luxury. Expect high-quality materials, a sporty driving position, and decent space for five occupants. The dashboard is dominated by Jaguar's Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, featuring two central touchscreens, and thankfully, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard. For luggage, there's a practical 505-litre boot, which expands to 1163 litres with the rear seats folded down. Plus, you get a nifty 27-litre frunk for stashing charging cables.
Performance & Driving Experience
This electric Jag doesn't just look quick; it properly shifts! The EV400 uses two Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM), one on each axle, delivering potent all-wheel drive. This setup unleashes 294 kW of power and a stonking 696 Nm of instant torque, catapulting the SUV from 0-100 km/h in a thrilling 4.8 seconds, with a top speed of 200 km/h. It handles with agility and precision, feeling planted yet comfortable – a true driver's EV. Multiple regenerative braking modes help you claw back energy with gusto.
Range, Battery & Charging
The I-Pace EV400 is powered by an 84.7 kWh (usable) battery pack, offering a Green Cars Compare calculated real-world range of approximately 375 km. Its energy efficiency is rated at 4.43 km/kWh. For charging, it uses the European standard CCS Type 2 port. Plugged into a 7 kW AC home wallbox, a full charge takes around 12-13 hours. Find a 100 kW DC fast charger, and you can juice the battery from 0-80% in about 40-45 minutes, making longer journeys a breeze.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
The Jaguar I-Pace EV400 is a proper safe house, earning a full five-star rating from Euro NCAP. Standard kit on this trim usually included essential driver aids like Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, a Driver Condition Monitor, and Traffic Sign Recognition with an Adaptive Speed Limiter. Many EV400s were also specced with optional packs adding features like Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist, Blind Spot Assist, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system, making tricky manoeuvres and motorway slogs far less taxing.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
In Europe, Jaguar typically backed the I-Pace with a 3-year/100,000 km basic vehicle warranty. More importantly for an EV, the high-voltage battery received an 8-year/160,000 km warranty, guaranteeing at least 70% of its original capacity – crucial for peace of mind. As an EV, maintenance is generally less frequent and costly than combustion-engined cars, thanks to fewer moving parts. While early models had some software quirks, most were ironed out by the 2020 model year, contributing to generally decent reliability for this innovative electric SUV.
