Overview
The Opel Frontera is back, and this time it's electric! The 2025 Frontera Electric 44 kWh reboots the iconic name as a seriously practical and budget-friendly compact family SUV. It's designed to be a no-nonsense choice for those making the switch to electric, blending rugged looks with a spacious interior and clever features. With a killer starting price of just €28,990, this entry-level model aims to shake up the market by offering impressive utility and style without breaking the bank, positioning itself as a compelling alternative to rivals.
What's New for 2025?
Pretty much everything! The 2025 Frontera is an all-new model, replacing the outgoing Crossland in Opel's lineup. It marks the return of a famous badge, now reimagined for the electric age. Built on the new Stellantis 'Smart Car' platform, it’s designed from the ground up to be versatile, supporting both electric and hybrid powertrains. For 2025, it introduces Opel’s latest design language and the brand’s digitally 'detoxed' Pure Panel cockpit, focusing on accessible technology and maximum practicality for a new generation of family car buyers.
Design & Exterior
The Frontera Electric sports a bold and chunky design that gives it a proper SUV presence on the road. Up front, it features the signature Opel 'Vizor' grille, seamlessly integrating the headlights for a clean, futuristic look. The boxy, upright stance not only looks tough but also promises plenty of interior space. Its dimensions are perfectly suited for urban life and family duties, measuring 4385 mm in length, 1795 mm in width, and 1660 mm in height. Distinctive wheel arches and a striking C-pillar complete its confident, modern aesthetic.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Inside, the Frontera gets Opel’s 'Pure Panel' digital cockpit, featuring two 10-inch screens that handle instruments and infotainment, creating a clean and modern dash. It comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless connectivity. The cabin feels spacious and airy for five passengers, with clever storage solutions dotted around. Practicality is the main event here; the boot is massive, offering 460 litres of space. Fold the rear seats down, and you unleash a van-like 1600 litres of cargo room, although there's no frunk for extra storage.
Performance & Driving Experience
This Frontera is all about smooth and efficient city cruising rather than blistering pace. Its single Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor sends 83 kW and 120 Nm of torque to the front wheels. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes a relaxed 12.1 seconds, with a top speed of 143 km/h. The driving experience is tuned for comfort, easily soaking up bumps and providing a quiet, stress-free ride perfect for the school run or daily commute. Multiple regenerative braking modes allow for an easy-going driving style while helping to boost range around town.
Range, Battery & Charging
Powered by a 44 kWh usable battery pack, this Frontera delivers a Green Cars Compare estimated real-world range of 259 km, making it ideal for daily driving. It’s impressively efficient, achieving 5.89 km/kWh. Charging is straightforward with its CCS Type 2 port. At home on a standard 7.4 kW AC charger, it'll take around 6 hours, or under 4 hours with the optional 11 kW upgrade. When you're on the move, it can handle DC fast charging at up to 100 kW, zapping the battery from 20-80% in under 30 minutes.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
While an official Euro NCAP safety rating is still pending for this new model, the Frontera is expected to come well-equipped with modern safety tech. The standard suite of driver aids will likely include essentials like forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and driver drowsiness alert. More advanced systems, such as adaptive cruise control, will probably be available on higher trims or as part of an optional pack, ensuring a solid level of protection for the whole family.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Owners can expect Opel’s standard European warranty package, which typically includes a 2-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty for the vehicle itself. Crucially for an EV, the high-voltage battery is covered by an extensive 8-year/160,000-kilometre warranty, guaranteeing it will retain at least 70% of its original capacity. This provides excellent peace of mind. As with most electric cars, maintenance costs should be minimal, with fewer moving parts meaning less frequent and cheaper servicing compared to a traditional combustion-engine car, boosting its value proposition.
