Overview
The Rivian R1S is a premium, adventure-focused electric SUV that masterfully blends rugged off-road capability with seven-seat family practicality. This specific Dual-Motor Standard pack version, produced between 2022 and early 2024, served as the entry-point to the R1S lineup. It offers a compelling combination of performance and utility, making it a desirable find on the used market. As the R1S is not yet officially sold in Europe, any pricing would be based on import costs, but it's positioned as a direct competitor to high-end European electric SUVs.
What's New for 2024?
The biggest news for this specific trim in 2024 is its discontinuation. Rivian streamlined its offerings, phasing out this 106 kWh "Standard" pack in favour of a new "Standard+" battery. This model was part of the crucial transition to Rivian's excellent in-house "Enduro" motors, which now power the newer configurations. While you can no longer order this exact model new, it represents a key step in the R1S's evolution, pairing the efficient Enduro motors with the original entry-level battery for a brief period.
Design & Exterior
It’s impossible to mistake the Rivian R1S for anything else on the road. Its friendly yet tough exterior is defined by the iconic vertical "stadium" headlights and a clean, full-width light bar. The design is monolithic and futuristic, cleverly masking its considerable size. It measures a substantial 5100 mm long, 2014 mm wide, and 1963 mm tall. The overall aesthetic rejects aggressive angles for smooth, clean surfaces, creating a unique look that feels equally at home in the city or deep in the wilderness.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Step inside and you’re greeted by a minimalist, airy cabin built with high-quality, sustainable materials like vegan leather and natural wood trim. A massive central touchscreen controls nearly all vehicle functions, but be warned—there's no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Passenger space is excellent in the first two rows. For your gear, it’s ridiculously practical, boasting a massive 314-litre frunk up front, 144 litres of trunk space with all seats up, and a cavernous 2262 litres with the rear seats folded flat.
Performance & Driving Experience
This is no sluggish SUV. The dual Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors provide responsive all-wheel drive, packing a serious 397 kW and 827 Nm of torque. That's enough grunt to launch this big family hauler from 0-100 km/h in a blistering 4.7 seconds. The real star, however, is the standard air suspension, which delivers a magic carpet ride on the road and can be raised for serious off-road ground clearance. It's shockingly quick, whisper-quiet, and handles with an agility that defies its size.
Range, Battery & Charging
This R1S is equipped with a 106 kWh usable battery pack. According to Green Cars Compare's calculations, this delivers a real-world range of around 413 km, with an impressive efficiency of 3.9 km/kWh. Its 400V architecture allows for a peak DC fast-charging speed of 215 kW, enabling rapid top-ups on long journeys. For home charging, the standard 11.5 kW on-board AC charger gets the job done overnight. While US models have a CCS Type 1 port, European versions would use the standard CCS Type 2 connector.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
While the R1S has not yet been rated by Euro NCAP, it comes packed with safety technology as standard. Every model includes Rivian's excellent "Driver+" suite, which features Highway Assist for semi-autonomous driving on motorways, combining adaptive cruise control and lane centering. Furthermore, it includes a blind-spot warning system, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. It’s a comprehensive package that doesn't force you to tick expensive option boxes for core safety features.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Rivian backs the R1S with a solid warranty. Owners get a comprehensive vehicle warranty for 5 years or 96,000 km, whichever comes first. The all-important battery and drivetrain components are covered for an impressive 8 years or 280,000 km, with a guarantee to retain at least 70% of the battery's original capacity. Maintenance is handled through Rivian's modern direct-to-consumer model, utilising either mobile service vans that come to you or dedicated service centres, bypassing the traditional dealership experience entirely.
