Could This EV Replace Your Tiguan? (Volkswagen ID5 GTX 2023 Review)

Video Summary

The ID.5 GTX doesn't have the same performance level as a Model Y Performance. It rides better and handles better. Volkswagen is aiming to do fully electric family motoring, at least for the next few years, until an electric Tiguan comes out.

The interior is generally a comfortable space. The interior is more up-market than the Tiguan, however material quality was never a strong point of the Tiguan. The ID.4 and ID.5 interiors are a step above the Tiguan's, but are still probably not as plush as a Touareg. The infotainment system is Volkswagen's outgoing version. All of the basics in the infotainment system here will remain through the ID.4 and ID.5's lifespan. Issues of non-illuminated sliders for the screen and touch capacitive buttons on the steering wheel remain. These may be fixed by the time the ID.4 and ID.5 arrive in Australia. Wireless smartphone connection has been rock solid. Even though this car doesn’t have the premium stereo, the audio quality is pretty good. A Harmon Kardon will be available in Australia.

The GTX has big wheels, sunroof, and IQ matrix LED lights. This model has manual cloth seats, a combination that would never come to Australia. The manual seats get you much lower into the car than the electric seat. The seats are comfortable and have dinky little armrests which is kind of a Range Rover thing.

Long drives in this car are very doable. The interior design is the anti-Tesla Model Y. The ID.5 concept is the anti-Model Y.
There is one touch access to a bunch of controls, whereas in the Model Y everything is driven through the touchscreen. You get soft on the doors and soft on the dash. There’s some hard touch below the beltline on the doors. But there’s heaps of storage throughout the centre console and more room underneath the center console, because it’s on a dedicated electric platform.

Visibility out is good and quality is reasonable if not outright plush. The ID.5 and the ID.4 have a pretty long wheel base which means space in the back is excellent. Leg room is good. Headroom is acceptable at 6’0”.

You could get a third person in the centre, even though it is a perch. The rear does not have B pillar air vents. This could be a design flaw, where kids will break off these vents if they’re positioned in the floor. With a 77 kWh battery, highway range is 458 kilometers. Real world highway range could be around the same range as a Model Y rear drive. The highway consumption is 16.8 kWh per 100 kilometers. It has a skateboard battery layout. The battery max DC charge speed is 170 kWh. The maximum AC charge speed is 11 kWh.

At an average of just under 100 kilometers per hour, this ID.5 GTX consumed 16.8 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers. It has a claimed 0-100 time of 6.30 seconds and has a claimed weight of 2243 kilograms.
