Goodbye Rotary, Goodbye Mazda MX-30 EV

Video Summary

Mazda is discontinuing the MX-30 EV for the U.S. market following the 2023 model year.

The MX-30 was only available in California.

It was a neat idea, but it had limited sales and reduced interest.

The MX-30 REV featured a rotary-based range extender.

The range extender was only intended to charge the battery.

This means that there will be no return of the rotary engine in the U.S.

The Mazda MX-30 timeline launched in August 2021, and was to be arriving in the spring of 2023 with a new rotary range extender, but after limited sales, it was discontinued in July 2023 in the U.S.

The limited production and availability in the U.S. could make the MX-30 a novelty in later years.

The cork accents are a throwback to Mazda's early beginnings.

The MX name and RX doors were a design element.

Americans are range-hungry, so 100 miles didn't work for most people.

There are still 2023 MX-30 models available.

Mazda is also working on new battery plans with Panasonic.

Current U.S. electrification efforts are focused on large-platform PHEVs, including the CX-90 PHEV.

They are working on new EPA restrictions and other emission protocols toward a plan of carbon neutrality.

It would be very interesting to see the MX-30 come in on trade in the next year or two.
