Video Summary

Here is the summary of the YouTube video:

The Golf R is a 21st-century hot-hatch icon that is fun, fast, comfortable, and practical. However, it is expensive; the test model is approximately £53,000.

The Golf R has 316 horsepower and 310-pound-feet of torque. It has an all-wheel-drive system that wastes no power and a seven-speed DSG gearbox that is snappy and efficient. Zero to sixty-two miles an hour is around four and a half seconds, and the car is seriously quick.

The Golf R has a nice, smooth power delivery with a nice rush to the red line. In real-world conditions, it is very effective at putting down that power.

Its ability to switch between savage pace and serene comfort is one of its biggest assets. The car's performance can be enjoyed just about anywhere: a roundabout, B-road, or motorway slip road, as it offers up an instant speed that is delivered seamlessly.

Despite the Mk8 Golf's decent, comfortable cabin, it’s not perfect. The reviewer complains about a lot of plastic dotted around, plain surfaces, and the interior has definitely gone downhill compared to the Mk7 and 7.5 versions. The test car lacks proper dials and the heating controls below the touchscreen do not illuminate at night. More steering feel, more brake feel, and just a bit more feeling, in general, are needed.

The MG4 XPower produces 429 horsepower and 443-pound-feet of torque, meaning zero to sixty-two miles an hour in 3.8 seconds. The MG4 has a motor on the front axle and a rear-axle system. Upgraded brakes have been added, and stiffer springs are front and rear, with wider tires.

The infotainment system is nice to use, with crisp graphics. Although the MG4 XPower’s driving position is pretty good and comfortable, the seats aren’t very supportive, and there is an awful lot of plastic around.

The reviewer notes that this car is, therefore, akin to a “budget Tesla”. Compared to the standard MG4, with which “you’d have more fun” this feels a bit “safer” because it has better grip.

The MG4’s 61.8-kilowatt-hour battery is good for a range of 239 miles, with fast charging from 10% to 80% in 35 minutes.

Ultimately, the overall setup feels “very safe and tied down” and so the reviewer doesn’t really feel like he's driving a “hot hatch”. Therefore, the Golf R wins the twin test.
