New 2024 MINI Cooper EV - is the retro supermini better than ever?

Video Summary

The all-new, all-electric Mini shares nothing with the current car except the brand name.

It has a new chassis, interior, and is built in a new country.

It has a brand new name, the Cooper, which is specific to the three-door body style.

Many classic Mini design traits, such as the glazed-in black pillars and contrasting roof are retained but are now much cleaner.

The wheel arch lining that has been around since 2001 is also gone.

The headlights are a little bigger and more flat, which makes the car look more upright.

The electric model now has an S badge but does not have a bonnet scoop.

There are three trim levels: Classic, Sport, and Exclusive, each with varying standard equipment levels.

There is a new range of wheel designs in 16 to 18-inch options and a usual combination of exterior color schemes and contrasting roof finishes.

Unlike the Aston Martin DB12, Mini ditched the front clam shell, resulting in shut lines where there were previously none.

The bonnet has real shape, flare, and undercut, adding some real shape to the car where the last one did not.

The rear lights have a dot matrix design and can be changed from inside the cabin.

The rear end looks wider because of its extra haunches.

The interior feels three generations newer than the previous model.

The 240 mm OLED screen combines the infotainment and driver information system.

Underneath the screen is a bank of switches that control the gears and the driver modes.

It has a fabric, houndstooth dashboard with a projector that puts shapes and colors onto the dashboard depending on the drive mode.

Top spec cars come with a three-spoke fabric steering wheel, while other models have a two-spoke wheel that is smaller than before.

The driving position is quite low despite the batteries, and it feels similarly ensconced.

Interior size is similar to that of the previous car, where drivers of 5'7" can fit behind themselves.

The boot is 200 liters.

The Cooper Electric E will have a 40.7 kWh capacity, electric motor producing 179 brake horsepower, a 199-mile WLTP range, and charges at up to 75 kW on a DC charge.

The Cooper Electric S increases the battery size to 54.2 kWh and comes with 214 brake horsepower and 330 Nm of torque, with a WLP range quoted at 249 miles, fast charging speeds at up to 95 kW, and charging the battery from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes.

Its overall weight is 1,600 kilograms.

It puts itself in a class of its own, being priced between smaller but cheaper cars like the Fiat 500e and similarly performing but cheaper mainstream alternatives like the Peugeot E-208.

Overall, this electric Mini looks really clean, is more futuristic, and has classic Mini traits that consumers know and love.
