The single-motor front-driven versions have been replaced by rear-driven variants with longer range. The dual motor all-wheel drive model has a larger battery. EX40 badging completes the transition, creating the car we're going to look at.  Premium pricing is still a drawback. The new EX40 shares its CMA platform and engineering with the Polestar 2.  Volvo was near the forefront of the trend towards electrification.

Performance: There are three flavors of EX40s offered. It has now moved the e-motor to the rear axle and slightly upgraded its output to 238 horsepower without really impacting its performance. Rest to 62 miles an hour is dispatched in 7.3 seconds. The top speed is 112 miles per hour, and EV Driving Range is WLTP rated at up to 296 miles.
The faster EX40 alternative is the twin motor all-wheel drive variant using a larger 82-kilowatt hour battery pack. This provides for a prodigious 408 horsepower total power output figure. In the standard twin motor model, torque is a massive 670 Newton meters and will catapult the car to 62 miles per hour in just 4.7 seconds.

Charging: Charging Times are competitive; the base single motor model DC charges at up to 135 kilowatts, and the single motor extended range version DC charges at up to 155 kilowatts, meaning a 10 to 80% public DC charge now requires 33 minutes. A full charge requires 11 hours with a base 69-kilowatt-hour battery.

Interior: Cabins are slightly starting to feel their age in comparison to competitors, however; all have 12.3-inch screen, Android infotainment, good sound, and heated seats with lumbar support. The back has rear seat legroom is not overly generous; back seat travelers could struggle on longer distance journeys. One strength is over-the-shoulder vision.

Technology: They utilize One Pedal Drive to provide regenerative braking and increase mileage. The system's functionality continues to improve as its technology is updated, and there is access to a variety of in-car apps using Google Play Store. The XC40 models come with a number of safety features as well as adaptive cruise control, hill descent control, and other useful features.

Visuals: The exterior styling might be considered divisive. New models have improved front bumper and frameless front grill. There are 3D taillights emphasizing shoulder lines.

Cost of ownership: Many EX40s are acquired using the "Care by Volvo" service. The premium is high relative to competitors, which is a drawback, though ongoing running costs are lower.
