FIRST DRIVE: Polestar 4 – No Back Window, But Why?

Uploaded 1 year ago by Top Gear

Video Summary

The Polestar 4 is a mid-size SUV. It is lower, wider, and shorter than the Polestar 3. It sits on an SEA2 chassis related to the Lotus Eletra. It's seen as competition for the Porsche Macan or Genesis GV70 Electrified. The 5 will be a large saloon, and the 6, a convertible.

It comes in long-range single motor with rear-wheel drive and long-range dual motor with twice the power. A performance pack offers a more sporty tune for the suspension and bigger Brembo brakes, but no extra power. It has the Swedish gold touches.

The main talking point is that it does not have a rear windscreen. Instead, it uses a camera, which is connected to a high-definition digital rearview mirror. The mirror pans when the driver indicates, but the movement is a little jerky. The digital rearview mirror can be switched off to use the standard mirror. It's UV rated, and you can option an electrochromic roof.

The interior design feels calm, airy, and spacious. There is good knee room in the back with reclining seats. The front interior is a very clean design with a standard Polestar steering wheel.

Instead of a vertical screen, there is a landscape tablet with Android Automotive built in, including Google Assistant and Maps. Setting the SatNav on your phone will then transfer over to the car when you get in. Setting everything you need to your favourite shortcuts on the screen helps.

There is a normal-sized boot with a false floor and a smaller lower section to keep the cables. The boot is quite dark. It has a little frunk.

A design choice was the lack of rear window. It affects the mirror. The steering can be quite light; everything feels a bit weird when going fast. But the single motor feels more fun and it is great value. 85% of the materials are reusable, recyclable, or remanufacturable. It has 22kW of AC charging and 200kW of rapid charging.
