Video Summary
The BMW i5 has an all-electric version of the redesigned 5-series.
It’s offered in two versions: the eDrive 40 with a single motor and the i5 M60, which is performance-oriented, nearly 600 horsepower, and with a range of up to 256 miles.
This model has a 0–60 in 3.4 seconds.
There is no front trunk. Instead, there is a large plastic cover.
BMW will launch this model in America with two versions; the single-motor, rear-drive i5 eDrive 40, and the dual-motor i5 M60 with the xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
There is an 81.2-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack in all models.
This model as tested costs $95,745.
Under boost mode or using launch control, the torque rises to 605 pound-feet.
It's 1,000 pounds heavier versus the gas version.
The i5 styling looks the same as the 5 Series. The color is called Carbon Black metallic and looks a bit bluish in the light.
There are M sport package lines with headlights, BMW performance LEDs, LED daytime running light and turn signals, and high and low beams.
A massive BMW twin kidney grill is in place.
The i5 has a closed-off portion in the grill where openings are not needed. Active grill shutters seem to be included. There is a BMW emblem as well.
No fog lights are included. It is one of the best-looking vehicles out there. The E-Tron GT is more attractive. The model has traditional three-box shaping.
It has grown by 3.8 inches compared to the gas 5-series. The wheelbase is 17.9 inches long; it is about 199 inches long and has a 7-series presence. The height has been raised by 1.3 inches and it's 1.4 inches wider.
The tested wheel size is optional, is 21 inches, and has machine-and-black inner spoke pockets. The tires are Continental EcoContact 6. It has 255x35xR21’s in front, which are fatter than the back.
The adaptive suspension exists, with an air suspension in the rear. M specific mirrors and power folding with cameras exist. The panoramic glass roof is available but does not open, and it has retractable sunshades. The window trim is blacked out.
The range is about 240 miles. It weighs 5,247 pounds.
As for the interior, it uses veganza “leather.” The "leather" feels durable and plush. Heated seats provide 18-way power adjustability. It has been made with an 8.5 software, and a mix of a 12.3-inch display on the instrument panel and a 14.9-inch display on the center stack.
There is also red-lighted interaction bar on the dashboard.
The review indicates some pros and cons.
Pros: It's fully electric, has good ride quality, and good interior build and design. The veganza interior is an excellent alternative to standard leather. Great performance that was 0-60 in 3.4 seconds.
Cons: High as tested price of $95,745 and only 240 miles of range in the M60 trim. No front trunk. There are no cooled seats standard and they should be for the price.
