Video Summary

The VW ID.4 has finally arrived in Australia after a long wait. It has a mid-cycle update that provides 75% more torque for the entry-level, rear-wheel-drive version. It is competitively priced with a lot of standard equipment. It has been worth the wait, and it is better than its competitors. There are only two options: $1000 metallic paint and a $900 styling package. It also has a no-cost option of the brown interior.

Standard features include matrix LED front lights, 19-inch wheels, a panoramic glass sunroof with an electric sunblind, and 3D rear lights with sequential indicators. The chassis has VW's MEB platform, shared with other VW, Audi, Skoda, and Cupra EVs. The ID.4 is positioned between the coming Skoda Elroq and the Skoda Enyaq.

The styling is understated but not necessarily sexy. It does have very thick sides, but the creasing helps break up the mass. There is a general emphasis on interior function, with carpeted door bins being the exception. The seats are the microfleece ergo-comfort type. Both front seats are fully electric, with 2-position memory and massage for both driver and passenger, and heating.

There are multiple ways the ID.4 quietly impresses the more you drive it. Adaptive dampers and progressive steering are standard. The powertrain features an 82-kWh battery and a 210-kW motor, with a 6.7-second claimed 0-100 time. It has a 175-kW maximum DC charging speed and includes both types of charging cables as standard. The six-year servicing price is $1785. It offers a five-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty. It drives like a refined, smooth, and quiet medium SUV, it doesn’t feel like a digital EV, but a calmed family vehicle.
