Overview
The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX is the go-faster, all-wheel-drive version of VW's popular electric family SUV. It aims to blend everyday usability with a healthy dose of performance and a sportier look. As the range-topping trim, it packs more power and grip than its single-motor siblings, making it a cracking all-rounder for those who want practicality without sacrificing fun. With production ending in 2025, it represents a great value proposition on the used market, with prices hovering around €36,800. It's a proper do-it-all EV with a sporty twist.
What's New for 2025?
The 2025 ID.4 GTX is the final evolution, benefiting from the major late-2023 powertrain upgrade. It gets the potent APP550 rear motor, bumping combined power to a punchy 250 kW. This update also brings a much-improved infotainment system with a larger screen and, crucially, illuminated touch sliders for volume and climate control – fixing a major bugbear of earlier models. These changes make the final GTX the most powerful and user-friendly version yet, sharpening its competitive edge before its production run concludes.
Design & Exterior
The ID.4 GTX flexes its performance credentials with a more aggressive look. It gets unique bumpers, a gloss-black air intake grille, and distinctive three-diamond LED daytime running lights that make it stand out. The roof and rear spoiler are finished in black, contrasting with the body colour for a properly sporty aesthetic. Rolling on larger, bespoke alloy wheels, the GTX has a planted, purposeful stance. Its dimensions come in at 4584 mm long, 1852 mm wide, and 1631 mm tall, giving it a commanding yet compact presence on the road.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Inside, the GTX features a dark-themed cabin with sporty red contrast stitching and unique "GTX" branding on the seats. It’s spacious and airy, easily seating five adults in comfort. The main event is the upgraded infotainment system, now faster and more intuitive on its larger central touchscreen, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For practicality, it’s a winner, offering a generous 543 litres of boot space. Fold the rear seats down, and this expands to a massive 1575 litres. There's no frunk, but the rear cargo area is plenty big.
Performance & Driving Experience
This is where the GTX really shines. With its dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, it puts down a combined 250 kW and a massive 679 Nm of torque. This muscle, from an induction motor up front and a permanent magnet motor at the rear, launches the car from 0-100 km/h in a brisk 5.4 seconds. The instant shove is addictive, and the AWD system provides brilliant traction out of corners. The ride is comfortable and composed, but the GTX adds a layer of agility and driver engagement not found in standard models.
Range, Battery & Charging
The GTX is powered by a 77 kWh (usable) battery pack. According to Green Cars Compare's calculated 'real-world' range estimate, this delivers a solid 447 kilometres, with an efficiency of 5.81 km/kWh. When it's time to plug in, the standard 11 kW on-board AC charger can top it up overnight. Find a DC fast charger, and it will hoover up electrons at a peak speed of 175 kW, taking it from 10-80% in under 30 minutes. The CCS Type 2 port is conveniently located on the rear quarter panel.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
Safety is a top priority, with the ID.4 platform earning a full five-star rating from Euro NCAP. The GTX comes well-equipped with Volkswagen's IQ.DRIVE suite of assistance systems. This typically includes standard features like Front Assist with autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. More advanced features like Travel Assist, which combines adaptive cruise and lane centering for semi-autonomous driving on motorways, and a 360-degree camera system are often bundled in optional packs, making long journeys safer and more relaxing.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Volkswagen provides solid peace of mind for ID.4 GTX owners. The vehicle is covered by a standard 2-year, unlimited kilometre basic warranty in most of Europe, with options to extend. The crucial high-voltage battery pack gets a more extensive warranty, covered for 8 years or 160,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. This guarantees the battery will retain at least 70% of its usable capacity during that period. With fewer moving parts than a petrol car, maintenance is simpler, typically involving checks on brakes, tyres, and cabin filters.
