Overview
The 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 GTX is the sporty, all-wheel-drive pinnacle of VW's popular electric SUV lineup. Positioned as a practical yet fun family hauler, it dials up the performance without sacrificing everyday usability. This top-spec trim combines a punchy dual-motor setup with unique styling cues, making it a compelling alternative to rivals like the Tesla Model Y. For those wanting more poke from their electric family car, the GTX is the one to have, with pricing starting from €53,255 in the European market. It's the GTI of the electric era!
What's New for 2025?
For 2025, the ID.4 GTX gets a serious shot in the arm. The headline upgrade is a new, more powerful and efficient rear motor, bumping total system output to a punchy 250 kW. This isn't just a paper upgrade; it delivers a noticeable performance boost. Inside, VW has addressed key feedback with an improved infotainment system running on a larger screen and featuring illuminated touch sliders for easier use. The clunky old gear selector pod has also been ditched in favour of a more conventional steering column stalk, cleaning up the dash.
Design & Exterior
The ID.4 GTX flaunts a sportier, more aggressive look than its standard siblings. Unique front and rear bumpers, high-gloss black accents, and signature GTX badging set it apart from the pack. The distinctive three-diamond LED daytime running lights give it a menacing presence. It’s a well-proportioned SUV, measuring 4584 mm in length, 1852 mm in width, and 1619 mm in height, giving it a solid stance on the road. Standard 20-inch alloy wheels complete the performance-oriented aesthetic, making it look as quick as it feels.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Inside, the GTX feels spacious and modern, with unique red contrast stitching and branded seats reminding you you're in the sporty model. Passenger room is excellent in both rows. The updated infotainment system is a game-changer, now housed in a slicker, more responsive 12.9-inch touchscreen with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Practicality is a strong suit, with a generous 543-litre boot that expands to a massive 1575 litres when you drop the rear seats. Unfortunately, there's no frunk for stashing charging cables.
Performance & Driving Experience
With its dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, the GTX is properly quick off the line. It'll launch from 0-100 km/h in a swift 5.4 seconds, thanks to the combined 250 kW of power and a hefty 679 Nm of torque. The clever setup uses an efficient permanent magnet motor at the rear and an induction motor up front for when you demand full thrust or extra grip. While it's a comfortable cruiser, the GTX offers sharper handling than the standard ID.4, feeling planted and secure through the twisties.
Range, Battery & Charging
The GTX is powered by a 79 kWh usable battery pack, delivering a Green Cars Compare calculated real-world range of around 457 kilometres on a full charge, with an efficiency of 5.78 km/kWh. When it's time to plug in, the standard 11 kW on-board AC charger can top it up overnight. Out on the road, it can guzzle electricity at up to 175 kW from a DC fast charger via its CCS Type 2 port, getting you from 10% to 80% in well under 30 minutes.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
Safety is a top priority, with the Volkswagen ID.4 platform earning a full five-star rating from Euro NCAP. The GTX comes well-equipped as standard, featuring essential kit like Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist), Lane Keeping Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control to take the strain out of long journeys. For the full suite of tech wizardry, you'll need to tick the box for the optional assistance packages, which add advanced features like Travel Assist for semi-autonomous driving and an overhead-view camera system for tight parking manoeuvres.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Volkswagen provides solid peace of mind for ID.4 GTX owners. The vehicle itself is covered by a 2-year, unlimited kilometre warranty across Europe. Crucially, the high-voltage battery pack is protected for a much longer period: 8 years or 160,000 kilometres, with a guarantee that it will retain at least 70% of its usable capacity. Scheduled maintenance is minimal compared to a petrol car, with service intervals typically set for every two years, regardless of how many kilometres you’ve clocked, helping to keep running costs down.
