Overview
The Rivian R1T is the electric pickup that rewrote the rulebook, blending rugged off-road chops with sports car pace and luxury refinement. This Dual-Motor Max version is all about crushing long distances, positioning itself as the ultimate electric adventure vehicle. While not officially sold in Europe, its blend of massive range, clever features like the 'Gear Tunnel', and premium feel puts it in a class of its own. It's a seriously capable and desirable bit of kit for anyone wanting one electric vehicle to do absolutely everything, from school runs to mountain expeditions.
What's New for 2024?
For 2024, Rivian refined its lineup, and this Dual-Motor model showcases the brand's brilliant in-house 'Enduro' motors. These motors, designed and built by Rivian, are key to unlocking the impressive performance and efficiency of the truck. While this specific 'Max' battery configuration was phased out mid-year to make way for a revised lineup, it represents the peak of Rivian's long-range offerings during its production run. The focus for this model year was on streamlining production and perfecting the core technology that makes the R1T such a standout performer on and off the road.
Design & Exterior
You won't mistake the Rivian R1T for anything else. Its friendly yet futuristic face, defined by the signature vertical 'stadium' headlights and a full-width daytime running light bar, is instantly recognizable. The clean, uncluttered lines give it a modern look that stands apart from traditional pickups. It’s a big machine, measuring 5514 mm in length and 2014 mm wide, but its proportions are well-balanced. The coolest party trick is the 'Gear Tunnel', a unique storage space running through the vehicle's width, perfect for stashing gear and keeping the cabin tidy.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Inside, the R1T Dual-Motor Max boasts a stunningly minimalist and upscale cabin. The use of sustainable wood and high-quality vegan leather gives it a premium, modern-Scandinavian vibe. There's ample space for five adults to travel in comfort. The tech is dominated by a large central touchscreen and a crisp digital driver's display, though it famously omits Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For storage, it’s a champion: you get a massive 314-litre frunk, a practical 821-litre bed, and a whopping 1670 litres of space with the rear seats folded.
Performance & Driving Experience
Don't let the size fool you; this thing is properly quick. The dual PMSM motors—one on each axle for smart all-wheel drive—unleash a combined 397 kW and a colossal 827 Nm of torque. That's enough to rocket this pickup from 0-100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. The standard air suspension delivers a plush, comfortable ride on the motorway but can firm up for surprisingly agile handling in the twisties. Off-road, it's a beast. Strong, one-pedal regenerative braking makes city driving a breeze and helps claw back energy for the battery.
Range, Battery & Charging
This is where the 'Max' trim truly shines. It packs a massive 141 kWh usable battery, delivering an outstanding real-world range of 627 km, as calculated by Green Cars Compare. Efficiency is impressive at 4.45 km/kWh. For charging, its 400V architecture supports a peak DC speed of 215 kW, allowing a 10-80% top-up in around 40 minutes. At home, the standard 11.5 kW AC on-board charger will replenish the battery overnight. While the US model uses a CCS Type 1 port, a European version would be equipped with the standard CCS Type 2 connector.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
As the Rivian R1T is not officially sold in Europe, it does not have a Euro NCAP safety rating. However, it comes comprehensively equipped with Rivian's 'Driver+' assistance system as standard. This advanced suite includes features you’d expect in a premium vehicle, such as 'Highway Assist' which combines adaptive cruise control and lane centering for relaxed motorway driving. It also includes Lane Keeping Assistance, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Automatic High Beams, ensuring a high level of active safety for every journey.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Rivian backs its vehicles with a solid warranty package. Owners get a comprehensive bumper-to-bumper warranty covering the vehicle for 5 years or approximately 96,000 kilometres. Crucially for an EV, the battery pack and drivetrain components are covered for an impressive 8 years or about 280,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. This includes a guarantee that the battery will retain at least 70% of its original capacity during that period. Maintenance is handled through Rivian's direct service model, with mobile technicians able to perform many services at your home or office.
