Overview
The Rivian R1T is the American electric pickup that's rewriting the rulebook for adventure vehicles. This Performance Dual-Motor version, equipped with the Large battery pack, was a sweet spot in the range, offering blistering pace and serious utility. This specific configuration, produced between 2023 and 2024, wasn't officially sold new in Europe, but represents a new breed of go-anywhere, do-anything EV. Its unique blend of luxury, tech, and rugged off-road chops makes it a hugely desirable machine on the import market, commanding a premium price.
What's New for 2024?
For 2024, the big news was the continued rollout of Rivian's brilliant in-house 'Enduro' motor system. This Performance Dual-Motor trim was a key part of that strategy, delivering a potent 496 kW and staggering acceleration. It cleverly bridged the gap between the standard dual-motor and the original quad-motor setup. While hardware remained consistent, Rivian’s aggressive over-the-air software updates constantly refined the user experience, enhancing driving modes, battery management, and infotainment features throughout the year, meaning a 2024 model feels fresh and continually improving.
Design & Exterior
The R1T's design is unmistakable and a massive part of its appeal. It’s futuristic yet rugged, with the iconic vertical 'stadium' headlights and a full-width light bar at the rear. It’s a proper-sized truck, measuring 5514 mm long and 2014 mm wide (without mirrors), giving it immense presence on the road. The clean, uncluttered lines are a masterclass in modern design, and clever features like the powered tonneau cover and integrated air compressor hint at the incredible utility packed within its stylish 1986 mm tall frame.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Inside, the R1T is a tech-lover's paradise with a minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired design. The cabin feels premium, using high-quality sustainable materials and beautiful open-pore wood. Two massive screens dominate the dash, running Rivian’s slick proprietary software, though it notably lacks Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Passenger space for five is generous. Storage is bonkers: you get a massive 314-litre frunk, the 821-litre rear bed, and a unique 'Gear Tunnel' cubby. Fold the rear seats, and total cargo space expands to a cavernous 1670 litres.
Performance & Driving Experience
Don't let the pickup body fool you; this thing is a rocket ship. The Performance Dual-Motor setup delivers a whopping 496 kW and 1124 Nm of torque through its all-wheel-drive system, launching this truck from 0-100 km/h in a supercar-scaring 3.7 seconds. The two Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors provide instant, seamless power up to a top speed of 177 km/h. Thanks to its standard air suspension, the R1T is incredibly comfortable on-road and astonishingly capable off-road. It’s a Jekyll and Hyde machine, blending serene cruising with brutal acceleration.
Range, Battery & Charging
Powering the adventure is a substantial 131 kWh (usable) battery pack. According to Green Cars Compare's calculated real-world estimates, this is good for a very respectable 538 kilometres of range, with an efficiency of 4.11 km/kWh. For European use, it would feature a CCS Type 2 port. At home on an 11.5 kW AC wallbox, a full charge takes around 12 hours. Out on the road, its 400V architecture can handle DC fast charging up to 215 kW, zapping the battery from 10-80% in about 30 minutes.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
While the R1T has not yet been officially rated by Euro NCAP, its strong performance in US safety tests is very reassuring. Every R1T comes standard with the comprehensive 'Driver+' assistance suite. This includes 'Highway Assist,' which combines adaptive cruise control with lane centering for relaxed motorway driving, alongside a full suite of active safety tech. You get blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking as standard, making it a very safe and modern vehicle capable of towing up to 4989 kg safely.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Rivian backs the R1T with a solid warranty package. Owners get a comprehensive vehicle warranty covering 5 years or 100,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. The crucial battery pack and drivetrain components are covered for an impressive 8 years or 160,000 kilometres, with a guarantee that the battery will retain at least 70% of its original capacity. Rivian's direct-to-consumer model relies on mobile service technicians who can perform many maintenance and repair tasks right at your home or office, offering a uniquely convenient ownership experience.
