NEW Hyundai Ioniq 9 review – we've DRIVEN it! | What Car?

Video Summary

The Ioniq 9 will likely be the most expensive Hyundai in the UK.  It is Hyundai’s largest model, but smaller than a BMW X7 or Land Rover Defender 130. The Ioniq 9 and the Kia EV9 share similar platforms and powertrains.  This SUV is 1.8 meters tall with higher ground clearance than a typical hatchback. Aerodynamically, the Ioniq 9 is more curved and less boxy than the EV9.

With digital door mirrors, the entry-level model achieves a drag coefficient of 0.259, while models with conventional mirrors have a drag coefficient of 0.269; even without digital door mirrors, the drag coefficient is still better than the EV9’s 0.28. The Ioniq 9 has a larger battery (106 kWh usable capacity) than the EV9. The single-motor, rear-wheel-drive version with 20-inch alloys has an official range of 385 miles, higher than the Kia and Volvo equivalents. The model shown in the review has a dual-motor version, along with 21-inch alloy wheels, and an official range of 372 miles. Charging from 10% to 80% on a 350 kW charger takes about 24 minutes; the max charging speed it gets is 250 kW.

The interior offers l laminated side windows in the front and second row. The three-row seating is standard. You can choose premium relaxation seats. The suspension feels slightly firmer than the Kia EV9. Wind and road noise are minimal, thanks to foam-filled tires. You can watch Netflix or YouTube via the features-on-demand system in the backseat. The AC can be controlled by the backseat passengers. The reviewer is a fan of physical AC controls.

Storage includes 52 liters (AWD) or 88 liters (RWD) under the front bonnet, large main boot of 1323 liters with the 3rd-row seats folded down, or 620 liters with all 3 rows of seats folded up, storage under the floor in the main trunk and a spacious central area console. Hyundai’s interior quality has been improving, with upmarket materials in the Ioniq 9, though hard plastics do still exist in the cabin. Agility on twisty roads has some noticeable roll in the Ioniq 9, feeling more like a Land Rover Defender rather than an Audi Q7. This is fine as it’s a seven-seat family car and isn't trying to be a sport SUV. Overall, this large SUV will offer some great value if you’re looking for something like a 7-seat electric SUV for the family.
