Overview
The Rivian R1T Performance Dual-Motor Max is a trailblazing electric adventure pickup that masterfully blends rugged utility with supercar-rivalling acceleration. This specific trim, produced for a short period from 2023 to 2024, paired Rivian's in-house dual motors with its largest battery for the ultimate combination of power and range. While not officially sold in Europe, its unique proposition as a premium, high-performance utility vehicle makes it a fascinating machine. It's a do-it-all EV that’s as comfortable on a mountain trail as it is silently cruising on the motorway.
What's New for 2024?
The 2024 model year was a transitional one for the R1T, with the "Performance Dual-Motor Max" trim being a key but short-lived star. It was among the first configurations to feature Rivian's potent, in-house 'Enduro' dual-motor setup paired with the massive 'Max' battery pack. However, this specific combination was discontinued mid-year as Rivian streamlined its offerings in preparation for a broader 2025 model refresh. For buyers of this version, it represents a unique and high-spec snapshot in the R1T's rapid evolution, offering a now-rare configuration.
Design & Exterior
The Rivian R1T’s design is unmistakably futuristic yet ruggedly handsome. Its signature front end is defined by the vertical "stadium" headlights and a sleek, full-width daytime running light bar. Measuring a substantial 5514 mm in length, 2014 mm in width, and 1986 mm in height, it has an imposing presence. Unique features like the clever 'Gear Tunnel'—a lockable storage space running through the width of the truck—showcase its innovative design. The Performance trim looks clean and purposeful, letting its advanced lighting and powerful stance do all the talking.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Inside, the R1T boasts a minimalist, tech-forward cabin for five, crafted with sustainable materials like vegan leather and recycled textiles. Dominating the dashboard are a large central touchscreen and a crisp digital driver's display, which handle nearly all vehicle functions—though note the lack of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Passenger space is generous, feeling airy and modern. Cargo solutions are brilliant; beyond the main bed, you get a massive 314-litre waterproof frunk and a combined trunk/under-bed storage of 821 litres, expandable to 1670 litres.
Performance & Driving Experience
This is where the R1T Performance trim really shines. The dual PMSM motors—one on each axle—deliver all-wheel drive and a staggering 496 kW of power and 1124 Nm of torque. That's enough to launch this pickup from 0-100 km/h in a breathtaking 3.7 seconds. On the road, the standard air suspension provides a surprisingly plush ride, while off-road it can raise for impressive ground clearance. The driving experience is one of immense, instant power, combined with refined handling and strong, adjustable regenerative braking for one-pedal driving.
Range, Battery & Charging
Equipped with a massive 141 kWh usable battery pack, this R1T delivers an impressive real-world range, calculated by Green Cars Compare to be around 627 km on a single charge. Its efficiency is rated at a solid 4.45 km/kWh. For charging, it uses a 400V architecture. In Europe, it would feature a CCS Type 2 port. AC charging maxes out at 11.5 kW, meaning a full charge takes about 12.5 hours at home. On the go, it can handle DC fast charging up to 215 kW, replenishing the battery rapidly for long journeys.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
While the Rivian R1T has not yet been officially rated by Euro NCAP, it comes comprehensively equipped with a standard suite of advanced safety systems. Rivian's 'Driver+' system includes Highway Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control and lane centering for semi-autonomous driving on motorways. Also standard are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, a 360-degree camera system, and lane keeping assist. This robust package ensures a high level of safety and driver confidence is included right out of the box, with no expensive options needed.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
Rivian's warranty is comprehensive, offering peace of mind for its advanced technology. The vehicle is covered by a 5-year/100,000 km basic warranty. More importantly, the heart of the EV—the battery pack and drivetrain components—are protected for an impressive 8 years or 280,000 km, whichever comes first. This includes a guarantee that the battery will retain at least 70% of its original capacity during that period. Maintenance is handled through a direct service model, which would require establishing a network for any potential European launch.
