Overview
The 2016 Tesla Model X P90D stormed onto the scene as a high-performance, all-electric SUV, turning heads with its Falcon Wing doors and futuristic appeal. This beast packed serious punch, blending family-hauling practicality with supercar-scaring acceleration. Positioned at the premium end, it was a tech-lover's dream. While new prices were sky-high, this discontinued gem can now be snagged for around €37,900 on the used market in Europe. It’s a statement piece offering a unique blend of space, speed, and zero-emission kudos, even if it's a few years old.
What's New for 2016?
For 2016, the Model X, particularly the P90D trim, was still fresh, having just launched. Key introductions included the remarkable self-presenting front doors and those iconic, if sometimes finicky, Falcon Wing rear doors. Tesla was also rolling out early versions of its Autopilot hardware, promising advanced driver-assistance features. The P90D itself was a performance flagship, often showcasing the latest powertrain tech Tesla had to offer for its big SUV. Continuous over-the-air software updates also meant the car kept evolving even after rolling off the lot in the Netherlands or USA.
Design & Exterior
The Model X P90D boasts a striking, almost spaceship-like design that still looks modern. Its most talked-about features are undoubtedly the power-operated Falcon Wing rear doors – pure theatre! Up front, a vast panoramic windscreen stretches overhead. Measuring 5052 mm long, 1999 mm wide (mirrors folded), and 1684 mm tall, it’s a sizeable machine. The P90D trim typically featured subtle badging and often sported larger alloy wheels to hint at its performance credentials, all while maintaining a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette essential for an EV.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Step inside the P90D and you're greeted by Tesla's signature minimalist cabin, dominated by a colossal central touchscreen. Material quality aimed for premium, though early models occasionally faced scrutiny. Seating configurations offered space for five, six, or seven. Luggage? No worries! There's 357 litres in the boot, expanding to a van-like 2431 litres with seats down, plus a handy 187-litre frunk. Tech-wise, that main screen controls almost everything, though native Apple CarPlay/Android Auto weren't on the menu in 2016; Tesla’s own system handled navigation and media.
Performance & Driving Experience
Hold on tight! The Model X P90D, with its dual-motor (PMSM front, IM rear) all-wheel-drive setup, catapults from 0-100 km/h in a blistering 4.0 seconds, thanks to a whopping 345 kW and 967 Nm of instant torque. An optional ‘Ludicrous Mode’ upgrade could shave even more time off that sprint. Despite its 2514 kg heft, it handles surprisingly well, with standard air suspension soaking up bumps for a comfy ride. Regenerative braking is strong, allowing for one-pedal driving much of the time, adding to its futuristic driving feel.
Range, Battery & Charging
The P90D packs an 85.5 kWh usable battery, delivering a Green Cars Compare estimated real-world range of around 366 km. Its efficiency is rated at 4.28 km/kWh. For charging, the standard 11 kW on-board AC charger will juice it up fully in roughly 8 hours. Hook it up to a DC fast charger, and it can guzzle electrons at up to 120 kW via its Tesla Type 2 (Mennekes) port, common in Europe, meaning significant range can be added quickly. The vehicle operates on a 400V architecture.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
Safety is a big deal for Tesla, and the Model X P90D scored a top-notch 5-star rating from Euro NCAP. It came equipped with a suite of active safety features, often bundled under the 'Autopilot' banner. This typically included adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. Depending on the specific car's options, it might also have features like autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and parking sensors. The strong chassis and crumple zones contribute to excellent passive safety, making it a secure family wagon.
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
When new, the Model X P90D typically came with a 4-year/80,000 km basic vehicle warranty in Europe. Crucially for an EV, the battery and drive unit were covered for a more generous 8 years with unlimited kilometres, including a guarantee against excessive degradation (usually 70% capacity retention). Maintenance is generally minimal compared to petrol cars – no oil changes! Over-the-air software updates keep the tech fresh. Reliability on early Model X units had some teething issues, particularly with the complex Falcon Wing doors, but many have been sorted.
