Overview
The 2020 Tesla Model X Standard Range was a short-lived but compelling entry into the large electric SUV scene, bringing those iconic Falcon Wing doors to a slightly more accessible price point. Though discontinued, it’s a cracking used buy, especially in the EU market with an estimated used price around €35,950. This all-wheel-drive behemoth packed signature Tesla tech and practicality, offering a unique blend of family-hauler and futuristic statement piece, even if it wasn't the top-dog range king of the Model X line-up.
What's New for 2020?
For 2020, the big news for this particular Model X was primarily its existence as the "Standard Range" variant, introduced in 2019 but ceasing production within 2020. This trim aimed to lower the entry barrier to Model X ownership. While the wider Model X range saw continuous software updates enhancing Autopilot and infotainment, this specific trim offered a 75 kWh battery (nominal) and slightly less range than its Long Range siblings. It retained the adaptive air suspension for that magic carpet ride, making it a comfy cruiser.
Design & Exterior
Phwoar, what a looker! The Model X Standard Range boasts that unmistakable, super-slippery Tesla silhouette, looking like it’s beamed straight from the future. Those theatrical Falcon Wing rear doors are the party piece, making access to the back seats an event. Up front, the massive panoramic windscreen sweeps over your head. This seven-seater stunner measures 5052 mm in length, 1999 mm wide (mirrors folded!), and 1684 mm tall. Standard 20-inch wheels usually completed its distinctive, grille-less EV aesthetic for this trim.
Interior, Tech & Cargo
Step inside, and it’s minimalist heaven, dominated by a colossal central touchscreen controlling pretty much everything. Material quality is decent, and the cabin feels airy, especially with seating for up to seven (5, 6, or 7 seat configurations available). Luggage? Oodles of it! You get a useful 357 litres in the boot, expanding to a van-like 2431 litres with seats down, plus a handy 187-litre frunk under the bonnet. Tesla’s slick infotainment is standard, though no direct Apple CarPlay or Android Auto – it’s all Tesla’s own ecosystem.
Performance & Driving Experience
Don't let "Standard Range" fool you; this thing shifts! With dual motors providing all-wheel drive, it packs 250 kW and a hefty 550 Nm of torque. That means 0-100 km/h is dispatched in a properly quick 4.8 seconds, thanks to its PMSM front and AC induction rear motor combo. It’s surprisingly agile for such a big bus, with the standard adaptive air suspension offering a great balance of comfort and control. One-pedal driving via strong regenerative braking makes city driving a doddle.
Range, Battery & Charging
The Model X Standard Range rocks a 72.5 kWh usable battery, giving a Green Cars Compare calculated real-world range of around 344 km – decent for daily duties and some longer jaunts. Efficiency is rated at 4.74 km/kWh. For top-ups, the standard 16.5 kW on-board AC charger can brim the battery in roughly 4.5 to 5 hours. On the DC fast charging front, it can suck up electrons at up to 100 kW, getting you a good chunk of range in about 30-40 minutes via its Tesla Type 2 port using the Supercharger network.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
Safety is paramount with Tesla, and this Model X scored a top-notch 5 stars from Euro NCAP. It comes loaded with Tesla's Autopilot as standard, which includes adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist to take the strain out of motorway slogs. Features like auto lane change, Navigate on Autopilot, Autopark, and Summon were typically part of optional upgrades like Enhanced Autopilot or the Full Self-Driving Capability package, so check if the used model you're eyeing has these ticked!
Warranty & Maintenance Coverage
For European models, Tesla typically offered a basic vehicle warranty of 4 years or 80,000 km. Crucially, the battery and drive unit on the Model X were covered for a reassuring 8 years or 240,000 km, whichever came first, with a guarantee of at least 70% battery capacity retention. Maintenance is generally minimal thanks to the EV powertrain; no regular oil changes here! Tesla recommends service on an as-needed basis, keeping running costs relatively low for such a high-tech machine.
